Tourist Industry Struck by Storms Cuts Noted in Maine
Rainy weather last week caused a slight loss to Maine summer tourism and crops, though officials caution the impact is uneven. Everett F. Greaton of the Maine Development Commission says most vacationers kept plans and those already in Maine stayed, with resorts and gas stations likely hardest hit. He pegs year-to-date tourism about ten percent below last year, expecting August weather to recover. Charles M. White of the Agriculture Department notes crop damage is limited overall, though corn and beans show some harm and potato fields in isolated areas suffer minor washouts.
