Freight and passenger rail demand surges in wartime history
In 1943 U S rail traffic nearly doubled 1918 peak, with passenger traffic over twice as high. The fleet ran with one third fewer locomotives and cars, yet labor was 500,000 less, due to two decades of plant upgrades and cooperation between carriers, employees, and users. Private planning funded the surge without federal fare subsidies, paying taxes of 1.87 billion in 1945 versus 229 million in 1918.
