Bath built destroyer Meredith sunk in Normandy invasion
The Navy reports the Bath Iron Works destroyer Meredith lost during landing operations on the Normandy coast. It marks the sixth Bath built ship sunk in the current war. Meredith, launched December 21 and delivered March 14, 1944, was named for Sgt. Jonathan Meredith. Other Bath built losses include Sims, Strong, DeHaven, Chevalier, and Hi-Esmaro.

Longtime Bath leader L Eugene Thebeau dies at 59
L Eugene Thebeau aged 59 died Monday morning at 10 15 at his home 406 Front Street after a three day illness of pneumonia. A Bath native he rose through Maine Central Railroad to become general agent, then treasurer of Bath Iron Works, later serving as Bath hospital trustee and Bath Memorial Hospital president. He held civic posts including Bath alderman and council leader, was active in Elks Lions and Knights of Columbus, and chaired the War Price panel. Survived by wife Vanona Atkinson Thebeau a daughter from first marriage Mrs Webster Starr two siblings and a grandson Michael Starr. Funeral arrangements announced from St Charles Borromeo Brunswick.

The next waste paper salvage drive in Bath will be held Tuesday August 1. John Parker is the local salvage chairman and the paper will be collected and disposed of by city playground children at the three playground collection centers. Householders are asked to cooperate by bundling and tying the paper when called for. The War Production Board and State Salvage committee note the critical paper shortage and each ton saved equals a cord of pulp wood aiding Saber manufacturers.
