York and Cumberland Railways and the York & Yank'em Legacy
The Boston and Maine suspends passenger service on the Portland to Rochester line, leaving a lone freight train. The York and Cumberland, later Portland and Rochester, faced financial distress, mergers, and a shift to motor transport, illustrating how local railways faded into history while remaining a small cargo link. The piece traces the line’s birth in 1848, repeated reorganizations, and ultimate absorption into the Boston & Maine, with a nod to the enduring question of what a railroad name implies.
