The Fourth of July unfolded with sunshine and orderly conduct. Officials note reduced use of fireworks and hope for continued restrictions to avoid fires and accidents, viewing the day as a dignified celebration of independence.
President Wilson defends consistent policy amid wartime aims and calls for pursuing shared principles. The piece urges Bath to accelerate housing and urges consideration of acquiring Woolwich stake in the People’s Ferry Co implying municipal consolidation could aid growth.
The Red Cross received July base hospital dressings and front line packets large enough for headquarters work but not for outside distribution. Rooms will be closed all day Thursday. Lieutenants Walter Brown and Roy Gouley represented Bath in a banquet at Riverton park for Captain Peter Christensen on his promotion to first lieutenant in the United States Guards. Edith Merrill returned to New Gloucester after a week in Boston Lynn and Salem. Miss Dorothy Morse attends Bath summer school while Miss McGillicuddy teaches. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Morse host a motor boat trip with guests from Springfield. Several locals and visitors are named with travels, visits, dances, and outings around Bay Point, Parker Head, and nearby cottages.
Prof Bowditch P Frazee longtime sanitarium conductor artist and inventor died at 66 in Lowell Massachusetts after a lengthy illness. He was born in New York City raised in Michigan directed a Kalamazoo hygienic sanitarium and moved to Lowell twenty years ago. He leaves a wife, daughter Ruby Frazee a nurse in training, and mother in law Mrs V R Mellen of the city who cared for him during his illness. Funeral is set for tomorrow afternoon at his home.
Miss Mattie Louise Alexander of Brunswick and Raymond C. Preble of Bath wed June 11 at the Berean Baptist parsonage officiated by Rev. Frank M. Lamb. Only close relatives attended as Florence Alexander and William Gordon served as attendants. The couple will live with their parents after a reception giving many gifts.
West Bath residents report cottages along New Meadows and Oak ledge for the season. A 17 year old, Henry Legendre, drowned near New Meadows while diving with friends during Fourth of July activities, sparking divers and officials to search the river.
An early 20th century advertisement touts Doan's Kidney Pills for backache and kidney trouble. Mrs J Hart of 10 Charles St reports severe back pain and kidney issues resolved after two boxes bought from Swett's Drug Store. Claim includes price 60¢ and endorsement of Foster Milburn Co Buffalo New York.
Bath residents hosted guests including Mrs. William Gahill of Bath and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert W. Stevens of Auburn. A forest fire near Houghton ice pond scorched about five acres, fought by 75 men with help from Sabine cottage owners and Bath volunteers. Mayors and engineers aided, no homes endangered, expected minor loss.
Lawrence M. Dickinson 19 of Wiscasset died after a motorcycle skid near Waldoboro. The Bath Iron Works employee was a passenger in a sidecar driven by Fitch of Boston. Dickinson lost consciousness on the return trip home after the crash and likely suffered internal hemorrhages.
Sagadahoc council K of C hosts a two day lawn party and carnival raising funds. Judge Thomas Riley of Malden Mass delivers a patriotic address predicting a four to nine year war with Germany and urging national effort and shared sacrifices. Gaudreau's band provides music and a vaudeville Follies of 1918 delights audiences. Community volunteers manage refreshments and hospitality as plans to repeat the address are discussed.
A letter-style testimonial from Mrs. Hisse Monatesse of Haverhill Massachusetts and her seventeen year old daughter Antoinette describes anemia improving with Dr Williams Pink Pills. Mrs Monatesse reports relief after three boxes including better appetite and strength. The daughter shows rapid color return and reduced limb pains after using the pills. The ad notes drugstores or mail order available for 50 cents per box with a free blood health book.
Mrs. Sybil Houdlette came back to her Dresden home Wednesday after spending the winter with her daughter Mrs. W. W. Morse. Local news notes visits by Ernest O. Knight and Eugene Knight in Augusta. John Footer caught six pickerel at Nequasset pond and hosted a house party at his lake camp. Edward D. Jameson of Boston mingled with locals before a month in Union with his brother John S. Jameson on a farm.
