Ledge Located By Buoy Boat Hibiscus Near Kennebec River
The ledge where the steamship Berwindvale touched while entering the Kennebec River was found by the buoy boat Hibiscus. Details place the buoyed position with bearings from Pond Island light and the North Sugar Loaf, noting the ledge sits 18 to 20 feet below mean low tide and could have endangered deep drafted vessels at high or low tides. The Berwindvale will go to New York and then to dry dock for examination and repairs.
