Bath Iron Works Corp. awarded a $1,365,000 contract to build seven steel patrol boats for the Coast Guard. Each boat costs $195,000 and measures 165 feet. The first boat must be completed within 300 days of notice. Existing yacht and trawler work ensures yearlong activity.
Hugh J. Chisholm's steel yacht Aras impressed during builder's trials off Maine. The vessel reached nearly 17 knots on the Rockland course and performed a near eight during a water test between Damarsicove and Seguin Island with minimal list. Captain Charles A. Blair led the trials, noting the ship handled beautifully. Aras completed the Kennebec river to Bath run in 35 minutes and will be delivered midweek with Captain Blair to pilot to Pond Island.
St. Petersburg Florida January 4 80 000 tourists already in the Sunshine City with capacity loads arriving via through trains from northern points. Bath’s tourist colony grows with 12 residents staying until late spring and 25 more due by February 1. Yankee and Braves spring training shifts bring teams early Babe Ruth to Jungle Country Club Hotel February 8 John Coolidge and Mrs Florence Trumbull Coolidge arriving January 15 Senator elect Marcus A Coolidge and wife reserve for February 1. New arrivals from Bath include several residents and Sagadahoc county couples. Mrs James B Lemont hosts bridge club in West Bath Friday.
At the Bath city council meeting the health officer’s salary was raised from 400 to 800 dollars effective February 1. The council also settled a claim with Music hall owner Nathan Povich for 350 in full for damages tied to an armory lease during Battery H service. The session approved street light installation and discussed street grade damages on Lincoln Street with a January 21 meeting planned.
William S. Newell president of Bath Iron Works Corp. was unanimously elected a trustee to fill the Sewall term at the Patten Free Library. Rev. Omar W. Folsom was re elected to succeed himself. Judge Walter Glidden praised Mr. Sewall and a committee on resolutions was formed. The meeting also set up by law changes and welcomed new members to reach a 100 member quota.
The librarian Miss Margaret R Foote presents the 39th annual report noting an addition of over 500 volumes in the past year. The library operated 304 days with hours 1 30 pm to 8 30 pm and Saturdays to 9 pm. Children’s room hours were 1 30 to 6 pm and it closed Sundays and Armistice Day.
Elena Pecci formerly of Bath married Antonio Pelegrimo in Ortona Dei Marsi Aquila Italy on December 6. The couple honeymooned in Venice and plan to reside in Bath. Pelegrimo teaches at a school in his native city.
Charles C. Low reported a gain of 236.12 on hand this year compared to 655 last year. The appended list shows 18 trust funds totaling 54188.21. The report continues on page two.
January term opens at ten with many spectators and few lawyers. County Attorney Ralph O Dale has sought murder indictment against Thomas H Pearson of Bath for the New Year’s Eve shooting of Harold O Wagner. Attorney General Clement P Robinson of Portland attends briefly and then joins the grand jury.
