Distinguished Service Medal awarded to Brig Gen Curtis
Brig Gen Lee F Curtis chief of staff of the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe received the Distinguished Service Medal for service from January to October 1944. Curtis and former Governor Sumner Sewall served together in World War I in France. The Curtis family spends summers at Small Point Beach in their summer home.

Mrs. Clarence Oliver of Union street reports the death of her nephew Sergeant John S. Spellman killed in action in China on December 13. Spellman, a bombardier, was among the first American airmen in the European theater and earned several decorations. He married Alyce F. Fire decimates five buildings in Boothbay Harbor blaze
A Sunday early morning fire leveled five shops and damaged others on Commercial street across Boothbay Harbor. Fire chiefs describe a rapid blaze starting in a bowling alley then engulfing the Boothbay Register office Poole Market and several wharves. Firefighters from Bath Damariscotta East Boothbay and Wiscasset aided, sea water pressure held firm, and flames were checked by dawn.
