Maine to Erect Statue Honoring General Oliver Howard
The Maine Legislature in 1929 passed resolutions for a statue in Gettysburg National Park to honor Major General Oliver Otis Howard and Maine citizens who served in the Civil War with 50 000 in appropriations. Howard, born 1830 in Leeds, led at Gettysburg after Reynolds fell and commanded the Army of the Tennessee, later founding Lincoln Memorial University and many schools while serving as commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau.
