Dura L. Howard recalls Capt. James Murphy a longtime Sewall ship commander and avid TD pipes smoker who bought pipes by the case. He never exceeded one pipe a day and discarded it after each voyage, averaging two cases per trip.
Stanley E. Wallace held in $500 bonds to Sagadahoc Superior Court by Judge Gardiner R. Deering after probable cause found on a larceny charge involving $175 in connection with a house lot purchase for Frank P. Macfarlane. Attorney Edward W. Bridgham filed suit for damages $2910 against Wallace, tied to construction of a house and related alleged actions.
The Bath Water District received the final P W A check of 13 000 on the Kennebec River bed submarine water main project. P W A total contribution 58 500 against a 121 000 18 contract price. Work began Aug 1938 and officially completed Sept 25 last. contractors Merritt Chapman Scott Corp New London. Solar birthday party noted for Sonia Diane Haryt as her parents Prytreet celebrate her first birthday with friends and gifts.
The Bath Red Cross starts war relief garments including 60 sweaters and 70 dresses for women and children. An organized committee coordinates sewing with local church groups and a factory cutting program. Mrs. G Thomas Murphy chairs Refugee Production. Miss Carolyn Moses heads Production. knitting led by Mrs. Edward Sewall. volunteer packing overseen by Mrs. Edwin M. Fuller Jr. and others are urged to help with materials and instructions.
Fire heavily damaged a one room camp belonging to Charles Wallace a painter on North street extension. Flames started from a wood stove and quickly spread forcing Wallace to flee with only his clothes. Firefighters from Engine Four supplied long hose lines and pumps to reach the scene and protected the adjacent Kel ley Field gate house and nearby homes.
Three persons injured in a head on collision on Bowdoin Center road near a crest. Carl W Mitchell 48 Bowdoin driven sedan collided with John H Davis Exeter NH coupe. Ruth Campbell Wiscasset cut. Davis scalp wound. treated by Dr Pratt. Hennessey said no charges. Ray Hall Warren 64 stomach pains refused treatment.
Ex Alderman Robert H Haskell accepted the Democratic caucus nomination for mayor on February 14 and will change enrollment from Republican to Democrat at the Registration Board. His name will be removed from the Republican list and not added to the Democrat list for the June 17 primary, though he may vote in other elections. Robert T Boudreau, 47 Floral Street, left for Boston to work as an electrician in the Navy Yard.
Mrs Robert B Hatch read a paper on Famous Proteges at a Les Camarades Musicaux gathering hosted by Miss Emma F Hooper and Miss Martha E Hooper at 24 Green Street. The program featured a long list of vocal and violin solos, duets and a chorus with names including Mrs Hatch Mrs Hersom Mrs Albee Mrs Sturtevant Mr Ramsay Miss Melcher and Mrs Rice with accompanists and ensembles.
The Baptist Young People Union of Bath earned the banner for the largest number of points at the Freeport convention with about 50 attendees from First Baptist Church Bath. Officers elected include Miss Beulah Pratt president and Irving Elliott vice president. Delegates from Corliss Street Church attended in the afternoon and evening, with Rev. Frederick P. Moffatt among the participants.
Cosmopolitan Junior Club held a successful card party in the club house with ten tables in play. Proceeds totaling 20 dollars will fund furnishings for the junior club room. Prizes awarded to Mrs. D Leroy Lord, Mrs. Walter White, and Mrs. Clarence E Atwood with separate first second and consolation prizes in a separate contract.Refreshments were served by club officers and volunteers, including Miss Dorothy Stickney and others who assisted in planning and service.
Yale University’s Dr. Stanley C. Ball proposes birds map their routes at dawn and dusk by the sun, outlining paths on treetops and ridges. He notes deviations occur near water or cleared areas that pull migratory lines away from straight courses.
Eldred Rucker formerly of Bath and now in Washington visited Bath to view trials of the aircraft carrier Wasp on the Rockland course. Thick snow and fog reduced visibility for two days as crew left the ship. Mary A. took two and a half hours to assist departing sailors with a starboard landing via Jacobs ladder. Rucker, promoted to mechanical engineer of the Bureau of Construction and Repair, observed a barge from Searsport pitching and spraying water.

Mrs. Anna Campbell sent a $60 Western Union money order to Commander Mannerheim in Helsinki Finland for relief of troops at the Mannerheim line. The payment was collected by Mrs. Campbell during the past week. Arthur E. Wing of North Bath visited Gorham on Sunday.
Elmer A. Avery Jr of this city and Miss Vivian R. Spinney of Portland wed last Wednesday at 9 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip L. Eaton with Rev. George B. Wolstenholme officiating. The couple, attended by Mr. Eaton and Mrs. Randall Haley, plan to reside at 34 Academy street after a Connecticut honeymoon.
Central Church Men’s Club met at the parish house for a film on newspaper production coordinated by Fred A. Fuller. A 42-member lobster stew supper preceded the meeting as the group voted to sponsor a Cub Scout troop for church youths up to 12, with W Linwood Haynes Marius H Page and Frank A Givin named to organize it. Plans for an older scout troop were dropped after the Y M C A troop was found capable of serving over 12. Edward J McMann led the entertainment and supper was arranged by Mark A Jackson Joseph W Larrabee and Leonard Wetherbee.
William George Stacey son of Mr and Mrs George C Stacey 50 Washington Street and Barbara Gray Burgess daughter of Mr and Mrs Vernon A Gray Five Islands were married Thursday morning at 10 15 by Rev Joseph O Purdue pastor Winter Street Church in the parsonage 890 Washington Street The single ring ceremony was performed Attendants were Howard H Barter Hazel Bold and Miss Peggy Gray They will reside in Philadelphia where Mr Stacey is a shipfitter.
The Sterling Bible class held a successful two to four tea in the vestry of Corliss Street church drawing nearly 50 attendees. Mrs. John H. Hunt led table decor while Mrs. Frederick P. Moffatt and Mrs. Fred May poured and other local ladies assisted.
St Marys P T A voted to purchase a typewriter for the parochial school and to hold a public card party at Hotel Sedgwick on Thursday evening March 14. Mrs Marie Hamblett chaired the session attended by 20 members. pupils from the third and fourth grades performed a February birthday program led by Sister Veronica. Mrs Sadie Sarkis reported 628 dollars cleared from the recent card party. Mrs Beatrice Footer was named chair of the March 14 event at Sedgwick. The next meeting will be March 20 at the schoolhouse after benediction.
Bath residents Laura A. Craft Elizab ith Trott and Dorothy Wing plus Bowdoinham’s Charlotte White and Wiscasset’s Joanna Evans earned Dean’s List honors for the Fall semester with grades of B or higher. They are listed by registrar James A. Gannett.

Mrs George W Larrabee and Mrs Charles D Arcy hosted the Past Matrons club for Genesta chapter O E S with junior past matrons honored at Hotel Sedgwick Wednesday. Following dinner cards were played. Next meeting set for April. Plus notes on local family visits of the Mitch ell children.
