NEW FARM BILL Could grant broad spending powers to secretary
A critical view argues the farm bill lacks limits on the Agriculture Secretary s spending power enabling programs ranging from 106 million to 4 billion with payments or grants to producers. Critics warn it undermines soil conservation and favors subsidies for farmers not practicing intelligent cultivation. The piece likens NRA AAA to acts of Congress rubber stamped by courts.

Portland Lightship to Have Modern Signals
Charles C Brush, Superintendent of Lighthou of the Department of Commerce, announced that the Portland Lightship will be equipped with a radio signal and a synchronized sound signal for distance finding, to be effective May 1, 1936. When the sound signal operates a pair of radio dashes will be transmitted and a group of two synchronized blasts will replace two code blasts, enabling distance by dividing the time between radio signal reception and sound blast by five. For example a twenty second interval means the ship is four miles from the station.
