Mizpah class of the First Baptist Church met Tuesday of last week at Mrs Leslie Dyer’s Phippsburg home. The meeting, in charge of Mrs J Russell Grant, was to alternate weekly with Mrs Carter hosting. Attendees included Mrs Grant, Mrs Carey, Mrs Carter, Mrs Green, Miss Wright and Mrs Young.

Miss Mary C Leo of Brunswick began duties as police matron of Bath on Friday with Lanham act funds supporting the office. She previously served as Brunswick police matron from April 1934 to January 1940 and was secretary and office manager for Governor Sumner Sewall in 1940 and 1941, later directing publicity for Maine Bureau of Health.
A wartime presentation at Bath Iron Works honored Lieut. Commander Heerbrandt USN and another officer for meritorious conduct during mine sweeping operations near Attu and Kiska in the western Aleutians. Both men, now at Bath Iron Works preparing to command future ships, were lauded by Vice Admiral Kinkaid for duty and sacrifice amid the war effort. The event included bonds urging and personal remarks from company officials.
The W C T U annual dues social occurred Tuesday afternoon at Mrs Nellie Browns Deering street home. The program featured Scripture prayer poems and current events led by Mrs Florence Howard Mrs Nella Stover introduced speakers and the group shared sandwiches cookies and coffee. The next meeting set for February 8 at Mrs Browns with cake and two sandwiches to be brought by members. The February social will begin with a Washington birthday party on February 22 at Mrs Florence Howards 25 Meadow Way.
Daniel L. Craney received the 50 year medal at a Polar Star lodge meeting held at the Masonic Temple. Rev. Dr. David L. Wilson and Benjamin L. Hadley presented the honor to the Lycoming lodge member, with 240 attendees and visitors from 48 lodges. A chicken pie supper preceded the event, and Dunlap Commandery will host a Washington's Birthday dance at the Temple on Feb 22.
The U S S Nicholas destroyer, awarded a Presidential unit citation for aiding in the rescue of over 700 Helena crewmen after the Kolombangara battle, was launched at Bath Iron Works on February 19, 1942. Named for Major Samuel Nicholas, it carries a lineage from the Revolutionary War and was sponsored by Mrs. B Tryon of Lionville, Pa.

An officer and an enlisted man were killed when their U S Navy plane crashed near the Thomas N Williams farm in West Georgetown during a routine flight from Naval Air Station. The pilot died in the flames while the enlisted crew member, ejected from the craft, was killed on impact. Fire crews and Marines secured the area as Navy planes circled overhead. names withheld pending next of kin notification.
Pythian Sisters met Wednesday of last week for an afternoon gathering that included a six o clock baked bean supper prepared by committee members Mrs Rose Jean Viola Melzard and Mrs Alice Rideout. Business reports and future activity plans followed with a Scotch Auction raising a good sum for the treasury won by Mrs Alice Rideout and the penny match won by Mrs Edith Miller. Mrs James Sweeney of 1033 Middle Street Sebasco Estates is hospitalized at Memorial Hospital.
