Bath Men Impress At Hearing On Ferry Proposal
A Bath Woolwich hearing before the Ways and Bridges committee examined Senator Baxter’s ferry resolution. W S Glidden outlined the People's Ferry Co. history, noting Bath owns three quarters of $56,000 capital and Woolwich a quarter. The Hockomock, bought in 1901 for $25,000, serves local traffic but cannot handle rising auto travel. in 1916 over 17 000 autos used the route linking Portland to Rockland and Northern Maine. Bath and Woolwich seek local service funding but oppose shouldering through-traffic costs amid a growing trunk line. The two towns have spent $62,082 in assessments over 25 years and say the current boat must be replaced promptly.
