Debate on Government Shipping and Preparedness
The piece argues against a government owned shipping tonnage program, urging private enterprise or subsidies instead. It critiques President Wilson’s plan to buy or build ships for private operation, warns of waste, graft, and limited ship numbers, and praises private industry and naval preparedness amid European warfare. It notes political campaigns and calls for private road building and states’ rights in public works. It also covers naval nitrate dependence, Brandeis’s Supreme Court nomination, and James Mann’s stance on a strong standing army and navy.
