Indian tongues responsible for names of places
Smithsonian ethnologist Dr. John P. Harrington traces American place names to Native American languages. He explains Utah means upper people in Navajo and Apache terms, Tacoma derives from Puget Sound words for snowy mountains, Manitoba means land of the spirit from Algonquin, and Seattle from Seh-Ahl, an influential local (Manitoba notes: spirit term manitoowa).
