Collection of 700 volumes on ships donated to Patten Library
Patten Free Library receives a gift of about 700 volumes focused on American sailing ships and maritime history. The collection, donated by East Chicago Public Library curator Frank H Whitmore, honors Captain Franklin D Whitmore of Bath and spans clipper era to whaling with works on rigging, navigators, pirates, and sea songs. The books arrive but display must wait for shelf rearrangement.

Prompt Action Saves Phippsburg Home on Christmas Morning
Clifford Robinson 34 of Ashdale section saved his two and a half story home from a Christmas morning fire. His seven year old son Mereen spotted the flames from an oil stove and alerted his mother. Robinson dashed through smoke to rescue the stove and couch, then phoned Bath fire department as neighbors formed a bucket brigade. Firefighters arrived after an eight mile run and with help from a pony chemical extinguisher the blaze was controlled. He sustained burn injuries but his family and Christmas tree remained intact.

Tired Fisherman Perishes In Georgetown House Fire
Truman E. Taylor a 76 year old retired fisherman died when his small story and a half home in Marrtown Georgetown burned after midnight. Neighbors found the house in flames and his body was recovered from the ruins. He formerly lived in Gardiner and belonged to the Gre department there. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Georgiana Lord of Revere, Massachusetts.

Ozbourn Destroyer Launched At Bath Iron Works Yard
The USS Ozbourn, a 2200 ton destroyer, was launched Saturday afternoon at 3:30 from Bath Iron Works yard. Named for Pvt Joseph William Ozbourn USMC Reserve who died July 30 1944 on Tinian the ship honors his sacrifice and his Medal of Honor citation for conspicuous gallantry.

Bath Man Named for Rockland's City Manager Post
Frederick D. Farnsworth, longtime Bath housing administrator and former town and city manager in Brewer Bangor and Fort Fairfield, was elected Rockland's first city manager under the council manager charter. He will resign from Bath Housing Authority effective Dec 31 and begin duties in Rockland in January while relocating with his wife. Farnsworth praised Rockland's charter as a leading model and urged Bath to study it if considering government changes.

Jerry the captive baby moose proves rare keeper in Maine
The story follows Jerry a baby moose found after its mother was killed by a truck. Brought to Swan Island Game Preserve on June 6 he is cared for by Mrs Velda Estabrook learning to drink from a pail and feeding 12 quarts of mashed feed plus cabbage daily. The keeper reports Jerry now weighs about five hundred pounds and stands four feet nine inches tall.

Icy Highways Hamper Motorists Across Region
