The report outlines post war job prospects for automobile mechanics, welders, tool and die makers, radio announcers, bricklayers, radio operators, common carriers, machine welders, and plumbers. In Smeltville a shifting tide and ice floe trapped nine smelting workers. A rescue by shanty owners and bystanders saved men as one friend helped others to safety, while Bath police reported two men fell onto the ice pack and were aided back to safety.
At the Bath lodge of Elks the group voted to provide use of its rooms for a Veterans Service Center once the city finds no suitable space. The rooms, formerly used by the Red Cross, are separated from the lodge and require no rent, promising cost savings and a telephone install. The proposal aligns with Elks War Commission work and funding for staff may be discussed at the January city council meeting. Lieut and Mrs Wade left for New York after visiting Mrs Bonemeade's mother.
A fragmented program lists Mr Ramsay and Mrs Albee at the piano with violin solos and duets, including works by Verdi Offenbach and Puccini. Performers include Mrs Hatch Mrs Melcher Mrs Sheiler and others in various chamber groupings.
The destroyer U S S Robert L Wilson will launch January 5 from Bath Iron Works. It will be the first ship out of the yard in the new year and is named for Marine Pfc Robert L Wilson who fell in the Marianas. Mrs Joe Wilson of Centralia Illinois will christen the vessel. Mr and Mrs John Black of 21 Grove Street hosted Mrs Black's parents and other local guests at dinner.
President Newell announced Bath Iron Works will build 32 diesel trawlers for a French Navy commission and other work including 166-foot diesel twin screw vessels and 60 moulding machines. Deliveries start November 1946 with all boats due by July 1947. The yard will not foresee increased personnel unless more work arrives.
Three residents of the Old Folks Home celebrate achievements today. Elmer Hayes marks his 75th birthday after 19 years as a guest, while Mr and Mrs Frederick S Coombs celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary after more than a decade together. Mr Coombs reaches his 83rd year on January 14.
Miss Harriet Larrabee recreation consultant with the American Red Cross at New York City headquarters resumes duties after a four day leave spent with her mother Mrs Mary Larrabee at 1179 High street. It was her first Christmas at home in five years.
Mrs Sumner Sewall acted as gracious hostess to about 100 guests at a cocktail and dinner party on New Year's Eve at Ork Hall in Bath. Lieut and Mrs Lewis H Hyde attended as guests of honor with the hostesses' birthday announced early in the evening.
December 1945 brought unusual temperature swings with moderate days and extreme cold periods driven by strong north winds. There were 25 fair days, four rainy days, and 11 inches of snow total, including five and six inch snowfalls on the 19th and 28th. Colds mornings hit four below, while the warmest morning rose to 44 degrees on the 26th.
The Junior Hospital League held its annual New Year’s Eve dance at the State armory attracting about 300 couples. Joe Avery’s orchestra set a festive mood as crowds filed in and grand march led by Hon. Donald N. Small and Mrs. Howard C. Bates. Proceeds around six hundred dollars go to Memorial hospital with thanks to Capt. David Y. Alkazin and many contributors.
Miss Eugenia Brackett spent Christmas vacation with her grandmother Mrs Jenny Cameron and will remain with her father Woodbury Brackett town manager of Houston. She traveled by plane on Sunday night to join him.
The wedding of the Alkazin and Ford families featured a traditional ceremony with Ruth Williams as soloist and an evergreen decorated venue. A three tier cake with a miniature bride and groom was cut at a reception followed by a bouquet toss by Ruth Leavitt, as the couple prepared for their wedding trip. The groom, recently discharged from the army, will rejoin Morse High School with plans to live with his parents. attendees included Mr and Mrs Fred Stone, Jean, and Mrs Forrest Smith.
