Hyde Opposes Bridge Proposal in Bath Opinion Piece
Raditer The Independent argues against a Kennebec crossing near Bath. It recalls Bath’s costly Knox & Lincoln railroad venture, bond defaults, and costly lessons from past overbuilds. The piece warns a Bath bridge would hamper shipyards and port value, and predicts navigation and rail issues if Winslow’s Rocks or Bath bridges proceed. It notes a May 20 1918 hearing and cites KE W Tyde and Mrs Mary F Syow as signatories.

Bath Iron Works launches second vessel of year
Bath Iron Works staged a winter launching of its second vessel this year at 10 45. The lightship type craft, named De Pettit of Commerce, measures 132 feet four inches long with 30 feet beam and 14 feet four inches draft and displaces about 775 tons. Miss Martha Cobb, Rockland, daughter of former Governor William T. Cobb, christened the ship with cider and received a traveling clock. The vessel features steel construction, a curved stem, overhanging stern, wooden upper deck, and a full suite of auxiliary systems including steam plant, fog signals, electric lighting, and refrigerating gear with 24 hour ice capacity. It will be held by a 9,000 pound mushroom anchor, carry a power launch from Boothbay Harbor, and a 24 foot whale boat built at Hedgdons brothers yard.
