Ex-Gov Smith Says St Lawrence Seaway Not Practical
Former New York governor Alfred E. Smith argues in a Buffalo Times interview that the St Lawrence waterway could never pay its costs, being impractical due to yearly closures and the railroads having ended the era of water transportation. He cites the costly barge canal and notes industrial discussions with Nettleton the shoe maker about canal shipping versus rail.
