Judge Walter S. Glidden presided as Dunlap commandery in Maine honors Rev. David L. Wilson grand prelate of the Grand Encampment. Wilson is praised as a strong friend, neighbor and Mason, welcomed with warm esteem and command of the Dunlap commandery.
Edward W. Sampson of Dunlap commandery receives rare honors at his induction in the Knights Templar as Rev. David L. Wilson and Rev. Francis W. Walsh attend as grand prelates. About 250 members and past eminent commanders participate, with Judge Walter S. Glidden delivering praise for Sampson and Williams.
Horace Bowker of the American Agricultural Chemical Co spoke at Presque Isle to farmers merchants and bankers in Aroostook county urging tax cuts to lift national income and restore purchasing power. He warned high taxes depress potato demand and suggested a large reduction in government expenses and taxes to revive prices and employment.
State budget woes prompt a shift as archaic laws lock surplus funds in Education Inland Fisheries and Maine Development Commission reserves. The Education Department could lose up to five hundred thousand dollars in a rewritten appropriation, freeing buried reserves for urgent needs and reshaping state finance.
Bath chapter of the American Red Cross votes to confer with city leaders on supplying a school nurse for Bath Public Schools. Ruth Weeks Henry, a Red Cross nurse, has been assisting students without extra pay, prompting call for dedicated school nursing. Committee includes Charles C. Low John C. Fitzgerald Rev Edwin D. Hardin and Mrs Seth S. Mullin ex officio.
City council discusses paying Hon. Arthur J. Dunton’s 33.50 for city legal services and halting further State aid road payments on Lower High Street. The roll of accounts 10 totalled 4 267 31 with arguments over Keegan Bridgham and Reams bills. Mayor Small breaks ties, and the council considers hydrant relocation and conference report wording.
Bath Iron Works Corp led a field of ten bidders with a bid of 96,500 for a 93 foot diesel towboat for B. Turecamping Co of Brooklyn N Y. The eight month delivery target ships with a 750 horsepower diesel. Other bids ranged up to 137,006 with varying delivery times. Brown & Demarest designed the vessel, to have a 28 foot beam and 11 foot depth.
The 279 foot Bath Iron Works yacht Caroline owned by Eldridge R. Johnson of Moorestown New Jersey has been loaned to the Smithsonian Institute for deep sea soundings and geology research in the Caribbean Porto Rico Deep. Fitted at the Tebo Basin Brooklyn it is expected to sash Jan 15 return March 15 or April 1. Dr Paul Barth will lead scientists and a photographer on a mixed scientific and pleasure voyage with guests including Mr and Mrs Leon Douglas and their daughters Florence and Ena. The vessel, designed by Henry J Gieme Inc, is a modern highly equipped private cruiser with navigation gear long range radio a fathometer and storage for 114255 gallons of water.
In a contentious session the council discussed removing an order as an emergency measure. Mayor Oren and Alderman Billings faced skepticism while others accused the petitioners of legal service bills. A Dec 7 meeting was planned for formal action.
