The nickname Mr Republican clings to Senator Robert A Taft of Ohio as voters reelect him to the Senate by a 430000 margin. Democrats tried to brand him isolationist but Ohio voters rejected the mudsling and reaffirmed Taft. After the election Taft said he would run for president. Republicans cheer the reply.

Edward B. Williams was sentenced to six months in Kennebec County jail by Judge R. Deering for probation violation. McNeil of Brunswick had DUI charges continued to December 19 with a 200 dollar appearance recognizance. Miss Clayre McKay was guest of honor at a pre nuptial shower hosted by Mrs Edward J McMann and Mrs Donald Sylvester at 16 Pleasant Street. The event celebrated her upcoming marriage to Richard Callan of the U S Air Force on December 26. Gifts were arranged in a miniature airplane hanger while refreshments were served buffet style. Invited guests included Mrs James P Callan and many others from the community.
William Meneally district manager says most telephone damage from the storm is repaired with only a few spots left. Outside crews of 65 plus 40 locals worked since Monday and will move to Portland tonight. Total restoration cost estimated at 17000 dollars.
Douglas E. Knight celebrated his eighth birthday at 46 High Street with a Thursday afternoon party for friends from 3.30 to 5.30. Beano games winners were Edward Morse and Alexander Luke. ring toss went to Tommy Day and clothespin race to Harry Knight. Alexander Luke won for finding the most chocolate babies. Guests included Alexander Luke James McLuer Harry Knight Carroll Moffatt Edward Morse Tommy Day Wayne Knight Pamela Atwood.
A rack body trailer driven by James Scott of West Sullivan lost part of its cargo of 260 lobster barrels around 12.32 Tuesday morning. The spill occurred when turning into South Street from West Sullivan to Gloucester Massachusetts, scattering barrels before damage was repaired and the truck continued.
The Hockomock Council, Degree of Pocahontas, celebrated its two year anniversary with a Thursday meeting at Rede hall. About 100 attended as the degree team directed by Ernest R. Avery Sr. conferred on a class of candidates and guests from Wenonah Wanda Minneola Swegustagoe Mishanock Ramona and Bath councils praised the group’s growth and work.
Mrs. Katherine G Whitney, a Pine Tree Society director, led the assembling and mailing of 16 000 membership folders for the annual campaign. Volunteers included Girl Scout Troop No 15 White Clover and Innerwheel members along with many listed women and Mrs Converse Fenn and others assisting.
Winter Street church resumes its Nativity program on Christmas Eve at 6 30 pm directed by Mrs Richard J Schaper with Mrs Roscoe P McFadden assisting. Ruth Wilson chairs the event with Eleanor Matter Alice Johnson Thelma Chubbuck Mae Ward Linwood Abbott Leland Patten Graeme Hanson and Sally Caton on the committee.
A Bath man received one week of probation to pay a fine of five dollars and costs totaling five dollars and seventy cents in Bath municipal court Saturday morning.
Edward L. Gaudreau Jr. and his son Arthur of South Portland have returned after visiting Mr. Gaudreau and Mrs. Gaudreau on upper Washington Street.
Bath officials report a rat infestation at the city dump and consider municipal rubbish collection. City Manager Ralph F. Mittendorf said he would investigate immediately and evaluate the use of orson as a rat control method while continuing to push for citywide garbage collection amid council lukewarm interest.
The Ladies Aid of Winter Street church held a pre Christmas sale and supper featuring gifts candies pickles jellies home cooked foods aprons and crafts. Chairs were Mrs Arthur Purington Mrs Lewis Gannon Mrs Fred Foote Miss Elwina Durgin Mrs Fred Higgins Mrs Kenneth Francis co Mrs Earl Kimble and Mrs Henry McCabe with aid helpers. Santa lighted displays and birch log centerpieces adorned the dining area where a lobster salad dinner was served to a full gathering.
Howard W. Larrabee former Bath alderman and now director of the Maine Department of Labor Division of Research and Statistics spoke to the Bath Lions at Sedgwick House. He described a proposed five point program to aid Maine manufacturers in mobilizing for defense production and to guide conferences with government officials.
The Sagadahoc District launches its 1950 financial campaign with Rodney Brooke and George Nugent leading a Friday meeting. Converse Fenn is chairman, appointing William Turpie as treasurer and Edwin to solicit gifts. Neighborhood team captains will be contacted. Bath and Woolwich units serve nearly 500 Scouts.
Pine Grove Troop 4 met at Winter Street Congregational vestry to plan a Christmas event on December 19. Mrs Richard J Schaper gave a Holland themed talk with costume and a doll, aiding second class badge work in international friendship. A Bear patrol treasure hunt was described with a final clue a red dot on the map prompting a "lost patrol" reveal at a predetermined destination.
Cub Pack 99 sponsored by the Men's club of Central Congregational church marked its first birthday with 110 attendees at the parish house. The event featured a ceremony led by Cubmaster Donald T. Page, a Wigwam cleansing by Indian Chief Akela Archie W. Holmes, roll call by Stewart McAllister, and awards for Bobcats, Wolves, Bears, and Gold Arrows. Certificates and new registration cards were issued, with Den Mothers and parents to the fore as cake and ice cream concluded the celebration.
Over two Troop 52 meetings each of the four patrols took part in a game using a city map. A red penciled course was marked, and each patrol followed the route to complete the challenge.
Troop 55 postponed the Saturday hike discussed at Monday’s meeting with 37 scouts present. Attendance contest leaders include Moose 1000, Wolf 935, Hawk 864, Explorers 850, Eagle 820. Jack Warren led the oath and pledge. Clint Owen and Dick Sherwood assisted.
Clover Leaf troop 5 held its fourth meeting November 28 at 3 15 pm in Huse Memorial school. Nine girls attended. After dues and business, a Christmas party was discussed. The troop expanded with three new members. The session ended with games, flag ceremony, promise and Scout hymn.
Peter Pan Brownies troop 11 held an Investiture ceremony at Grace Episcopal church parish house with perfect attendance Monday afternoon. Dues were collected by Susan Connard and Lorraine Cormier, budget supervised by Donalene Albert and Shirley Ames. Eight Brownies were invested, with Ann Bailey Janice Card and Susan Connard performing piano selections.
Pine Tree Troop 1, Intermediate Girl Scouts, held a Wednesday afternoon party at Lambert Park Community building. The program featured flag ceremony led by Jane Fraser, color guards Betsy Bertrand and Patricia Leonard, then a Tenderfoot vestiture for Betty Robinson.

Wild Rose Troop 2 met at 4 Garden Street Tuesday afternoon. Games opened the session, then badge work followed. The girls planned Christmas gifts, and were reminded to bring gifts for Hyde Memorial Home to the next meeting. They will also bring permission slips for Saturday’s trip to Freeport to see Christmas decorations. Accompanying them are leaders Mrs. Ernest Sinclair and Mrs. Clinton Owen, and troop committee member Mrs. Linwood Haynes.
St Marys Cub Pack 53 held a November 24 meeting at Lambert Park Recreation Hall with 50 plus cubs and many parents. Cub Master Noe Simard opened the event with a flag salute and hosted a radio quiz led by Dr Leno Charpentier. Den mothers and dads participated, a live mike was used, and awards of Wolf and Bear badges plus arrow points were given to several scouts.

Park and Cemetery Superintendent Walter E. Millett reports twenty five or more headstones overturned this week at Oak Grove Cemetery near the Soldier's Monument. About 19 stones toppled from bases near veterans area. several large markers and flags were disturbed. Damage appears to have occurred Wednesday night with a Bath woman noting stones face down Thursday morning. Cemetery workers saw no issues Wednesday.
Susan Bell Connard and Jewell Flint hosted a birthday supper at the Connard home on High Street with friends. Guests wore crepe paper caps, enjoyed holiday horn favors, cakes and ices, and played games with prizes won by Barbara Lawrence, Jean Shumway, Claudia Glynn, and Jewell Flint.
