Gas Tax Referendum in Maine Voters Decide Dec 10

Maine voters face a referendum on raising the gasoline tax by a half cent a gallon. Proponents led by Governor Sewall and State Grange master Richardson say towns would gain relief from about 900000 in real estate tax burden as state costs replace town expenses like snow clearing and roadside maintenance. Opponents including former highway commissioner Thurston and Senator Fernald say it adds taxes and would yield uneven impact across communities. Four state senate seats from Androscoggin Cumberland Kennebec and Aroostook counties will also be decided.
