Funeral of Ephraim Bridges
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 480 High Street for Ephraim Bridges with Rev. Clarence M. Fogg officiating. Burial followed in Oak Grove. Brothers EK. W. Bridges of Nantasket and sons George and Clifton Bridges of Bath were pallbearers. Lieut. Jefferson Seigl, reportedly the only American killed on the first day of the German drive March 21, 1918, was a friend of Lieut. Edward T. Ricker Jr. of Poland Spring. Ricker attended Seigl’s burial and helped recover Seigl’s missing diary, later located in Boston. Seigl’s diary disappearance was discussed in reports. A note from Rabattus reported Fred L. Austin, 80, son of Richard W. Austin, fell 30 feet while painting a tank in Newport, R.I., suffered spinal fractures and other injuries, and briefly returned to service after overseas duty before resuming work with Pittsburgh & Des Moines Steel Company.
