The destroyer escort U S S Hammerberg slid into the Kennebec waters after a Friday launch at Bath Iron Works. Attendees included Bath Iron Works president John R. Newell, sponsor Mrs. Moss, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Raymond H. Fogler, Gov. Burton M. Cross, and Rear Admiral J. H. Wellings. Speaker remarks honored the ship and sponsor in a ceremony preceding a luncheon and reception for about 225 guests.

About seventy members of the Southern Maine Chapter of the National Association of Cost Accountants heard Bath Iron Works vice president J William Schulze warn that Maine faces higher cost levels than southern regions. He urged management and public groups to reduce costs to keep prices competitive while preserving profits.
