A historic hurricane battered Bath causing widespread damage and power failures. Winds up to 85 mph snapped trees and blocked 12 streets. Crews cleared lines and roads through the night but full power restoration could take days. Telegraph and train service faced major disruptions and coastal areas suffered extensive property damage.

Richard W. Greene and Melvin E. Hodgkins of Bath, Bowdoin College students, were named scholarship recipients for 1954-55 by President James S. Coles. Greene, a sophomore, holds the John H. Payne Scholarship and Alumni Fund Award. Hodgkins, a senior, is Delta Sigma librarian and glee club member. Both participate in Bowdoin’s ROTC Transportation Corps unit.

New Traffic Lights for Washington Street Intersection
State highway engineers recommend a flashing red stop signal at the intersection of Washington street and Leeman highway. The new traffic lights will guide east and westbound Route 1 traffic and caution motorists turning north or south on Washington street. City Manager Nathan C. Fullbright Act Explained at Bath Rotary Meeting
The Bath Rotary Club heard Professor Charles Shain outline the 1946 Fullbright Act also called Public Law 584. Waves swept across the New Meadows river near Birch Point destroying the Burden's Marine Service Station runway and float and a 400 gallon white gas tank. Several pleasure boats were damaged or adrift with other floats smashed and trees felled along the shore. City officials estimated cleanup and restoration would take days with no dollar damage estimate yet provided.

Highway workers recalled from vacation use saws and equipment to clear debris. residents must dispose of fallen trees on private property, not expect the city to provide a dump.
