City Solicitor John P Carey said a 500 dollar use of Kimball field funds for grading does not meet emergency criteria under the charter. Council voted unanimously at a special meeting to table the appropriation and defer further action.
The Maine Three-Quarter Century Club plans prizes for best in many categories at its annual South Portland event next Wednesday. Contests include horseshoe pitching, checkers, knitting, fiddling, whistling and jig dancing with awards for oldest attendee and family milestones. The all day meeting at War Memorial Shell or the adjacent high school auditorium features free coffee, box lunches, and talks. Registration starts at 10 with advance sign ups through the Maine Publicity Bureau in Portland.
Walter E. Reid of Georgetown, longtime donor to Reid State Park, released a statement offering to gift 600 additional acres to the state after a survey and conveyance instruments are prepared. Negotiations to start the survey are underway, with completion expected in about a week. Reid, who first granted 300 acres and previously proposed 600 more, credits state and federal efforts for tangible progress toward park development. He also notes further land grants for highway and park access improvements and a bridge project from Woolwich to Arrowsic as road work advances.
The Maine Three-Quarter Century club will hold its annual meeting August 31 at the War Memorial Music Shell in South Portland with a rain date in the high school auditorium if needed. The organization, open to Maine residents aged 75 plus, has about 1,500 members and no dues. The event features entertainment and highlights the Publicity Bureau’s theme that people live longer in Maine.
Bath residents recount a pilgrimage to Ste. Anne de Beaupre from St Marys church in Bath. The group crosses the Canadian border, tours Quebec landmarks, attends Benediction, visits the Redemptoristine Cloister, and ends with a Mass and candlelit procession.
Superintendent Stanwood C Gilman issues the coming year calendar for Arrowsie Georgetown Phippsburg Westport Woolwich. Fall term runs Sept 12 to Dec 23 with holidays Sept 26 and Nov 11. Winter term Jan 3 to Feb 17. Spring term A Feb 27 to Apr 7, census break April 7 to 17. Spring term B Apr 17 to Jun 16 with holidays May 30 and Patriots Day. School hours 9 to 12 and 1 to 3:30 with recesses. X ray clinic at Bath for school staff.
Henry W. Owen Jr writes on the demolition of the two family brick house at Washington and King streets. The Riggs property, bought in August 1825, links to Crooker and Philbrook lineages and the Bath Bank. Builder Joseph Berry later became Gen. Berry and noted shipbuilder and customs collector. Probate to daughters Sarah Alice Eliza Jane, with Sewall J. Watson and William H. Watson as executors.
About 600 boys and girls from the city Summer playgrounds enjoyed a ninth annual picnic at Rock Hill Inn West Bath on a overcast day with showers. More than 1 000 hot dogs and other foods were shared plus prizes and races for various age groups. Edward J McMann director of Recreation led supervision with Germaine Bonney and volunteers. Judges awarded prizes for bean guessing freckle and various race events. lobster stew and lobster rolls followed the games.
Tuesday noon luncheon at Central church parish house featured fifteen members of the American Legion Junior baseball team as guests with coaches. President George Musk presided, Charles B. Doyle led the program, and Soring Addition received a past president's pin for his able year of service.
Bath and nearby areas along with much of the southern state were filled with smoke and a burning brush odor as woods fires burned out of control elsewhere. By noon no local fires were reported, though a fire at Alna in Lincoln County had been extinguished and a brush fire near Merrymeeting Camps was noted earlier.
The Bath Garden club met at Mrs Sumner Sewall’s Summer home in Small Point. Guest speaker Mrs Nahum Brewer of Boothbay Harbor spoke on Maine wild berries, noting the cranberry and blueberry as profitable for the state. She shared berry lore and the autumn blueberry foliage, raspberry fragrance, and wintergreen berries.
