The state highway department and the U S Bureau of Public Roads study the national highway system. Early reports show many miles listed as primary may not justify cost or traffic and could shift to secondary status to save maintenance and tax revenue.

The Ilex, one of eight government mine sweepers built in 1919, crashed into a bridge casing near Portland. The incident destroyed part of the top deckhouse and captain’s dining salon, narrowly avoiding serious injury or death. The vessel is 174 feet long, 32 feet wide, drafts 9.5 feet light and about 12 feet loaded, with 33 crew, twin screws, 1040 horsepower, and speed 11 to 12 knots.
Governor Barrows promotes the state tuna trophy event by landing a giant tuna with Sumner Sewall, a leading candidate for Barrows' successor. The tuna run ends after Labor Day with trophy awards to follow, and Bailey Island hosts the contest concluding on Labor Day.
In municipal court Keith Z Pierce faced a reckless driving charge after a midnight collision on Court street damaging a nearby home. George Volledes pleaded not guilty to gambling. Raymond Smith admitted larceny with a 10 dollar fine plus 19.66 costs. Roger D Gibson paid fines for traffic light violation. Charles Crocker faced a heavy fine for loitering with liquor. Arthur Stinson was discharged after a not guilty verdict. A bithulithic surfacing project and drainage upgrades were announced on the state highway between Cook's Corner and New Meadows. Carroll David Burnham Jr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carroll D Burnham of North Bath.
A Georgetown Island group visits Pond Island Light for the lighthouse service anniversary. Capt. Napoleon B. Fickett and wife host, discuss the station’s history, fog signals, lens work, and brass fittings. The visit highlights Maine coast lighthouses and a commemorative booklet.
Hershon B Oliver is named CITY FARM superintendent and Mrs Oliver matron by George J Goodwin of the Overseers of the Poor. Oliver, a former Bath resident, served in World War I, worked at Kennebec Greenhouses, cooked in Florida and the White Mountains, and ran the Village Inn at Boothbay Harbor. The Olivers succeed Mr and Mrs David E Rich who resigned.
