The 83rd Lincoln County Fair runs Aug 29 to 31 with night shows on the first two evenings. Organizers tout a bigger premiums pool for agricultural and household exhibits, enhanced 4 H and Grange competition, and upgraded stage entertainment led by J C McCabe. Walter Reed, foreman rigger and son of the late Capt. Enoch Reed, oversaw the complex rerigging of the Atlantis foremast at Electric Boat Co. in New London. The 148 ft 7 in mast required unique counterweighting with a 3600 pound lead-filled iron tub and a topping lift to offset overhangs, finishing without incident as the Atlantis departed with a satisfied captain.
The Morse family presents Morse high school with a Knabe concert grand piano once loved by Bath residents and gifts framed portraits of Charles W. Morse and family. The items honor Miss Jennie R. Morse and the late founders, marking a tribute to the school’s history and its benefactors.
Mrs Lena M Hamlin 55 of 674 High street was hit Friday morning at Center and Middle streets by an automobile driven by Martha B Cornelis Camden. Hamlin suffered knee and hand injuries and bruises while crossing Center street. Patrolman Joseph McLaughlin investigated and cited Cornelis for allegedly violating the stop sign ordinance.
A reminiscence recounts ranch life in Wyoming with 15 000 sheep and 300 Hereford cattle, plus horses dairy stock and poultry. The narrator describes dinosaur bone hunting on a ranch near the Big Horns, a Musselshell River swim, and visits to Spotted Horse and Kennebec while noting Kennebec’s supposed Indian name origin.
The Maine Central Railroad backs a turnip growing and marketing program in Washington County. Seed and borax are provided for the project. Turnips will be graded trimmed waxed and sold through markets arranged by the railroad. Machias High School Future Farmers of America members Julian Johnson Guy Cox and Julian Hayward each commit acreage to the effort.
Miss Mary Cunningham received her dance certificate from Irene Castle at the 56th annual Dancing Masters of America convention in New York. She is the only Maine teacher affiliated with both DMA and the Dancing Teachers club of Boston and plans to reopen her studio in the fall. She met Buddy and sister Hsben and studied ballroom with Castle, who has introduced the Castle Rock and Roll.
At a Dromore grange meeting last week the charter was draped in memory of Mrs. Belle Cutting. The Home and Community Welfare committee led a program including songs, readings, solos, and a rhythm band performance with selections such as On the Way to School Bells Are Ringing and Little Sir Echo.
The U S S Davis, a 1850 ton destroyer built at Bath Iron Works, left Boston Navy Yard for routine final tests after delivery. Four Bath executives joined the voyage including Vice President Archibald M. Main and engineers Henry O. Trowbridge Harry B Briggs Jr and Edward P Steininger. The ship, sister to Sampson and Jouett launched in 1938, should be at sea about four hours for the shakeout and trial.
Vacation Bible School began Monday at 9 am and runs through the 26th. Miss Amy Sherman of Dorchester Center Mass directs the program with staff including Miss Laura Craft, Miss Doris Crocker, Miss Rebecca Miller, Mrs Harmon Smith, and Rev. Jesse Kenders dine guiding the youth sessions daily until 11 45.
The steamer Virginia carried the season’s largest weekday passenger list, totaling 135. Sixty boarded in the city for the morning trip to the islands and Boothbay Harbor, while 75 down river residents and summer visitors joined at the Harbor and other resorts for the afternoon sail. August business is unusually strong and the season is expected to surpass recent summers.
Returns of the marriage of Ernest William Oliver son of Lyman I Oliver Phippsburg and Florence Ella Reed daughter of Alexander M Reed of 401 1/2 Summer street have been received at City Clerk Gilmore s office They were married August 9 by Rev Arthur O Olson in Portland.
Mrs. Dorothy Battie and daughter Anne Battie of Litchfield Conn spent the weekend with Senator and Mrs. Sumner Sewall at Small Point Beach. Their Saturday noon guests were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith of Bailey's Island, Commander and Mrs. Guysbert B. Vroom of Phippsburg, and Mrs. Harold Buckley and Miss Mary Anne Buckley of Hollywood Calif.
Mrs Paul M Olm and her two daughters hosted a large tea Thursday afternoon at Mrs Johnsons Middle Street residence. Out of town guests joined locals as mid summer flowers filled the house with a white larkspur and gypsophila centerpiece. dozens poured and served during four to six oclock.
A bright shooting star lit the Bay Point area on Friday night drawing witnesses from Bath and nearby towns. It glided from West to East and exploded with a pistol shot like report. Lighthouse beams from Bailey’s Island and Popham Beach glowed under clear skies as coast guardsmen praised the night.
Caroline Fleischmann arrives at Camp Pesquasawasis in Poland for a two week stay. She is chaperoned by her mother Mrs Archie Seekins and grandfather Octave Breton. Her brother Paul returns from a two week stay at Camp Gregory.
Mr and Mrs George A Cahill 717 Middle street mark 55 years of marriage dating from August 11 1884. They spent the day quietly with family at Bay Point and were guests at dinner hosted by daughter Mrs Andrew M Butterfield. Their children and grandchildren are all living and expected to join this evening.
Harold L Weeks notes no fires in the Aroos took Water District since May with only a few tree fires from July lightning. Rainfall influences fire activity. last year’s precipitation was double normal and produced none, while this year’s is slightly under but still prevents major fires. May July rainfall totals 8.49 inches, less than half of last year’s for the period.
Leon Record, a Mechanic Falls milkman, found a pigeon hanging by one leg from a telephone wire. A string tied to its leg and a stick at the end caused the bird to tangle as it struggled to fly, a cruel new prank blamed on local youths.
