President John S. Gehan of American Export Lines argues that foreign trade is a domestic asset. He notes imports supply more than half of 100 raw materials, with many materials wholly sourced abroad, while exports include substantial shares of cotton wheat rice and tobacco and machinery sales exceeding $3 billion.
The American Society of Newspaper Editors issues a Declaration of Principles asserting the public’s right to know and the press’s freedom to gather and publish information domestically and abroad without prior censorship. It pledges to resist encroachments on access to information and protect due process.

The annual Church Working League fair Aug 13 drew large off site donations totaling about 125 dollars toward repairs and water access. Whitney L. Wheeler of the Internal Revenue Service reminded that under certain conditions a child worker may still be claimed as a full exemption for federal taxes. Parents who contribute more than half the support can claim the exemption even if the child earns over six hundred dollars. West Bath firefighters responded to an explosion in a sawdust drier at Baklite Corp. early Thursday. Fire crews wet down smoldering sawdust amid heavy smoke while plant workers struggled to control the blaze. Earle Coombs of Arrowsic suffered a minor burn and was treated at Bath Memorial Hospital. A woods fire near Frank's Auto Service prompted a still alarm later in the afternoon.

Michael Rousse of 39 Meadow Way celebrated his 11th birthday Sunday with a party at his grandmother Mrs William Watsons Georgetown summer home. Guests enjoyed swimming boating and refreshments. Attending were Bobby Lundquist Needham Mass Larry and Patty MacDonald Wayne Garcia and Charlene Barter Bath.
The Hawley boat and its runway are now in place and in use. Miss Katherine Hoover of Five Islands and Boston was hosted by the Pattersons at Valley Cottage last Thursday afternoon, with Miss Sara Morton of Boothbay Harbor as host on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Marr of Everett Massachusetts stay with Mrs. Charles McMahon at Georgetown Center. Ida Belle Marr and her family of Everett vacationing at Five Islands visited the McMahon home, and Stanley Jewett of Mount Morris Michigan spent Sunday in town.
The Sixth Annual Five Islands Art Show opens at 1 p.m. Saturday in Howard's hall with entries from 57 artists including pieces from California and Texas. Boothbay Harbor artists organize the event and Captain Dave Dash leads a Sunday excursion from Boothbay to Southport. Judging is individual except for Best in Show, with popular voting by visitors. The show runs through Tuesday evening.
In Bay Point, property owners report drought effects on flowers from June to July. Readers note colorful blooms at several homes, birthdays celebrated, and many residents visiting the Navajo and nearby towns. Community sympathy offered to Harold Brown on his wife's death.
Mr and Mrs Edward Habinosky of Belmont Mass. hosted visits while Lester Eickmier of Watertown Mass spent the weekend with his family. Judy MacMahon staying in Bath with her sister Mrs George Phillips was home last weekend. Estelle Comeau and family plus Sylvaine Amirault called on Melvin Comeau in Weymouth Nova Scotia and Bath visits followed. Mr and Mrs Melvin Comeau and daughter Maria spent a few days at their Bath home. Mr and Mrs Richard Embery and baby of Medford Mass are spending a few days at the Briggs cottage.
Mrs David Armstrong and children Ellen Read and Betsy arrived from Arlington Virginia to visit Mrs Armstrongs parents Mr and Mrs Frank M Reinoehl on Washington street Cmdr Armstrong recently took command of the U S S Willis A Lee DL4 at Newport Rhode Island They will return to Arlington after the visit and later move to Newport
Alma White Stone 65 a Woolwich native died in Springfield Massachusetts after a brief illness. Born December 13 1891 she was the daughter of Lucien H and Irene M Trott White and widow of Carl R Stone. A Bates College graduate 1917 she taught in Topsham Winchendon Springfield and at Shrine Hospital. Survived by husband mother three sons Bruce a U S Naval Academy instructor sister and brothers. Committal at Riverview Cemetery Tops ham Thursday at 2 30 p m with Rev Martin Sargent officiating.
Harriet Hutchins Beals 73 former Bath resident and widow of Frank H. Beals died in North Hollywood California after a long illness Born July 21 1884 in Ellsworth she lived in Bath 1912 to 1921 and at Matinicus Lighthouse with her husband She was past president of T W Hyde Camp S U V auxiliary Low ell Temple and attended First Baptist in Brunswick Survived by two daughters Mrs Dorothy Fisch Mrs Mary E Gustin a son Donald W Beals a brother Alfred Hutchins two grandchildren and five great grandchildren Funeral from Curtis funeral home Saturday at 2 pm Burial at Oak Grove family lot
Three year old Nancy Pillsbury, daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Pillsbury Jr of Hanson Massachusetts and granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Sewall of this city, died after being struck by a car in front of her home. Mrs Pillsbury is formerly Patricia Sewall of this city. In Denmark cows are vacuum cleaned for cleanliness.
Frank C Farnham a Boothbay Harbor resident and former marine engineer on Kennebec river steamboats died Monday at his home. Born in Boothbay Harbor he worked on Wiwarna Westport Island Belle and other steamers from Bath to Boothbay and later at Bath Iron Works. He is survived by his widow one son John and five daughters plus grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Herbert T. Terrell 69 died suddenly Tuesday night at 528 High Street. Born in Bath December 30 1887 he was a World War I veteran and caulker in local shipyards. Survived by a California brother. Funeral Friday 2 pm at Curtis Funeral Home with burial at Oak Grove.
Mrs Clara B Brown 56 wife of Harold J Brown of Kennebec Point road Georgetown died Sunday in a local nursing home after a long illness Born February 26 1901 in Cumberland she was a daughter of Hans M and Catherine Petersen Surviving are her husband a son Harold J Brown Jr of Georgetown three brothers Peter M Petersen Mads M Petersen and Frank M Petersen three sisters Annie West Helen Riley and Hulda Flint and three grandchildren.
Mrs May Annie Cromwell widow of Melvin A. Cromwell formerly of Westport Island and Woolwich died Thursday at her daughter Ruth Worthley’s home in Arlington Virginia after a long illness. Born in Bath December 15 1867 she was a daughter of George and Amanda Dow. Surviving are her daughter four grandchildren and eight others.
Arthur F. Mayo the third of this city visited Old Town on Wednesday marking a brief local appearance. The outing highlights Mayo's presence in a routine civic district visit without incident.
