Protecting Hatching Eggs During Winter Months

Extension poultryman M E Jackson at Kansas State College in Manhattan warns that chilling eggs used for hatching reduces hatchability. Gather eggs three to four times daily at freezing or higher, or hourly near zero, then hold in a cool room around 50 to 60 degrees to prevent germ growth and chilling. Constant heating and cooling can kill the germ and further reduce hatchability.
