In New York observers report politics on every tongue as Roosevelt looms large and Republicans weigh the chances of a post Roosevelt era. Col Knox gains attention as a potential candidate while Senator Vandenberg and Senator Steiner figure as influential players with Maine’s support fueling their bids. Maine’s heated national campaign signals a strenuous summer season.
Supt Clinton D. Wilson defended Bath school management at Grace church parish house noting Bath elementary costs per pupil are 36 dollars yearly and high school 57 dollars, lower than Brunswick and many Maine towns. He warned against cuts that reduce kindergarten, manual training, music, and school health services, urging a new physical education program and increased funding.
Frank Sparks editor of the Grand Rapids Herald, a Bangor native, spoke of Bath and its people during the Associated Press luncheon at the Waldorf last Monday. He recalled his college days when he often visited Bath and noted the ten cent fare.
Monday's Bath Iron Works payroll shows 1,157 workers, a gain of about 40 in two weeks, with 1,076 in the Safety contest. Certificates were awarded 123 at the Bailey Evening School closing exercises held in Morse High School. Supt Clinton D Wilson read the names of recipients from the 23rd annual session as principal Mrs Margaret C Flaherty received a silver service. The program featured a school orchestra, a debate, and demonstrations in dressmaking cooking and other subjects.
The Central Church league held its 30th annual supper and business meeting at the parish house with 32 members present. Officers were elected for a two year term, gifts were exchanged for long service, and a social hour followed with a radio program. Acknowledgments were sent to Bath Daily Times and Kennebec Greenhouse provided decorations.
Miss Marguerite Eleanor Rogers daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter M Rogers of Whiskeay and Kenneth Ardenne Soule son of Mr and Mrs Loring K Soule of Woolwich were married last Sunday night April 19 on the 19th anniversary of Rogers family wedding. The bridal party included Velma Shirley Rogers ring bearer and Evelyn V Beloungie bridesmaid from Roxbury Mass. The couple will reside at 135 Hillside street Roxbury Mass after May 1 and Soule is employed at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Kenneth Albion Edgecomb known as Kenney, a veteran guide on Merrymeeting Bay, disputes federal estimates of 10000 geese in the Spring flight. He asserts there may be as many as 100000 and recalls seeing large flocks in past decades. He notes about 10000 bluebills in the spring flight and describes migration timing around May 15 to 20.
Rev Omar W Folsom longtime Winter Street Church pastor is 92 and highlighted by Cheerio in a Gay Nineties salute naming him Maine's Grand Old Man. He enjoys good health walks three miles daily and sleeps well. Friends sent welcomes and a money gift from Winter Street Church plus floral bouquets from church groups. A state inquiry reports the Richmond Dres den bridge over the Kennebec river will require at least 100000 to rebuild after March 14 ice and freshet wrecked three spans. Supervising experts from the State Highway Commission and Frank Hanson of Woolwich conducted underwater surveys and found bent steel, damaged piers, and two salvageable spans. The 1931 bridge cost 260000 to complete and now faces extensive work to restore year round traffic.
Police disclosed that two 16 year olds Ferdinand Pom erleaux and eee mien from Raymonds homes had returned Tuesday after their disappearance beginning last Friday morning. No further details were provided about where they had been.
