Poppy Day Observed by Legion Auxiliarists May 24
Saturday May 23 marks Poppy Day for 94 American Legion Auxiliary units. Many auxiliaries plan to sell red paper poppies on Memorial Day to raise welfare funds. Poppies are made by disabled World War II veterans at Togus, with workers earning a penny per poppy. Sixty men earned about two thousand dollars this year. The appeal notes 25,000 veterans died last year and emphasizes the ongoing need for welfare support.
