North Grammar Pupils Knit Afghan Gifts to Hospitals
Seventh grade pupils at North Grammar school completed a second Afghan and near completion of a third as a Junior Red Cross project directed by Miss Enid M Sawyer. The Afghans will be sent to Naval, Army, and Marine hospitals, edges crocheted and blocked under Sawyer's supervision. Modern railroad track scales under construction in this city
A crew of ten under George R. Russell of Waterville pace the progress on modern railroad track scales in the valley between Center and Washington streets just north of the Congress Shirt Factory. The pit is 54 by nine by over seven feet deep, blasted from rock with waterproof concrete, and will be pumped automatically. Shipping of a deck and beam cupboard housing the scale operator will finish soon under Marshall E. Powell of South Portland. The project, part of Maine Central Railroad work, will continue after completion with carpenters adding a steel deck and protective hood, then moving to Hallowell for a large culvert under a track. The crew resides in a workingmen’s car near York street.

Clifton Nickerson Receives Appointment to OCS
Clifton S. Nickerson grandson of Mrs. Mary J. Scales of 53 Elm Street has been appointed to attend Officer's Candidate School at Camp Davis North Carolina. He formerly served at Fort Eustis Virginia in the Coast Artillery and is currently on an eight day furlough before leaving for North Carolina. Nickerson graduated Morse High School in 1938 where he was class president for three years and left the University of Maine after joining the Army on January 6 1942. He played football baseball and basketball at Morse and at Maine and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and the Sophomore Owls.
