George W. Merrill of the Hyde Windlass Co was honored with a surprise gathering of office staff at his Oak Street home. Guests presented Merrill with his favorite smokes and shared games and a buffet lunch. Attending were Mrs Henderson Mrs Welch Mrs Smith Mrs Daley Miss Grace Miss Hutchins Frank Turner Cecil Paine Walter Day Oscar Marsh Eugene Rice and other former staff. The evening featured color stills including Samuel Morse's collection from Gaspe Peninsula Mrs Morse garden Bath and nearby areas and African views. Rice also shared his West Coast trip views including the Grand Canyon and Oregon.
Theta chapter hosted a hat show featuring Liese creations by min liner Justin Wuaryinie at Mrs. Turpie's home 976 High Street. Members viewed hats jewelry gloves and handbags while a Jewels ceremony was invited from Augusta. A quiz program and war bonds report were presented and refreshments served.
First Baptist church Co-Workers class in its April meeting voted to alternate meeting programs between defense work and entertainment. Two new members joined, Mrs. Ralph L. Blakeney and Mrs. Lena Spinney. A refreshment committee for the May 13 meeting at Mrs. Blakeney’s home was named, with Mrs. Clifford Harrington and others. An entertainment committee for that date was also set, and several members attended as guests.
Mrs Bernice Douglas of York former Brunswick organized an Iota Sigma chapter at Mrs Florence Howards home in Bath. Officers installed include Mrs Edward McGuiggan president and others. members aim to attract teens and early thirtys with monthly meetings to be announced.
Engine Two responded Friday at 10 47 to a grass fire south of the Stone House home of ex mayor Arthur Sewall. Chief Frates redirected units as the blaze grew, laying several hundred feet of hose from Winship street hydrant to control the fire.
The city marshal directs all auxiliary police to report for fingerprinting at police headquarters at once. Day workers may have prints taken after six pm by visiting the headquarters.
A well attended city hall gathering for air raid sector wardens outlined duties and data collection. Wardens received instruction manuals, survey sheets, temporary armbands, and will form sector posts with mapped boundaries. Fingerprinting plans were discussed as Ralph W. Bragg praised the turnout and progress.
The Bath teachers' club social committee met at Morse High School to plan a banquet and reception honoring Supt. and Mrs. Harland Ladd at Hotel Sedgwick on Thursday evening May 14. In the receiving line will be Mr. and Mrs. Ladd, Nathan W. Watson, and Miss Enid Sawyer.
Rotary Anns visited Worster House in Hallowell for a luncheon meeting and later toured the State School for girls guided by Supt Nellie F Stevens. They viewed the arts and craft shop hospital and classrooms. Next luncheon set for April 23. Emmanuel Assembly holds cottage prayer meeting and Bible study at 7 30 tonight at 188 North Street.
Mrs. Clifford B. Smith hosted Genesta chapter No. 73 O E S Past Matrons at a supper meeting at 35 Bedford Street. Twelve members attended. prizes went to Mrs. Thomas F. Perkins and Mrs. Horace W. Ward. Next gathering set for June 12 hosted by Mrs. D Arcy and Mrs. Ward at Mrs. Congdon’s Bruce Street home.
An unusually successful post Easter sale and supper was sponsored in Central church parish house by the Ladies aid with Mrs Alfred J Rowe in general charge. The event featured fancy articles cooked foods and aprons for sale and a chicken salad supper serving about 100 guests.
Grade 8, Division 3 pupils in Central Grammar donate home cooked foods and fruits to soldiers in Bath during week eleven. Volunteers include Hazel Corey as chair, with Daniel Wing Richard Wong Calvin Pelley Janet Sullivan Bruce Butrick Margaret Libby William Thomas Louis Ballou Iva Rogers Norman Jones Harry Barrett Jene Gamble Betty Anderson Richard Jackson Richards. Magazines and books come from Mrs Charles H Frost of Washington and Miss Betty Hill. The class is taught by Mrs Frederick W Humphreys and directed by Mrs Granville M Colby of grade 7.
The annual meeting at First Baptist Church held in the vestry with Deacon Arthur Dunton as moderator. Reports traced roles and elects for the coming year including clerk Mrs Nella Stover, assistant clerk Miss Evelyn Sotheard, and various committees with members such as Mrs Lotta Eaton and Mrs Ernest Wade. Delegates to Bowdoinham Convention named with alternates.
The Maine Salvage Committee begins operations with a Portland meeting to organize town and city salvage boards through Civilian Defense Councils. Richard M. Hallet of Boothbay Harbor chairs plans for a test area near Portland, with M.S.C. handling collections and WPA supplying transportation. The program targets rubber metal paper and rags while emphasizing non tin can and razor blade recycling for metal needs.
Lions club plans a card party April 22 at Morse High School gym. Tickets are selling briskly as prizes and refreshments attract attendees. Proceeds fund renovation of the old Dummer Street schoolhouse to house a Sea Scouts troop, with a new roof already placed and future renovations planned. Committee members Leavitt, Trowbridge, Pierce, Williams, McInnes, Guerin, Bowker, and Pratt labeled as organizers. Early reservations urged for a likely record turnout.
Pine Tree circle No. 826 of A F of A installed officers at its first Grand Army hall meeting. Mrs. Ethel Parshley assisted as installing officer. New officers include Mrs. Minnie Dall as chief companion and Mrs. Alice Rideout as past chief companion. The group meets at Colonial for lunch after the session and plans a next meeting on April 24.
Bath Memorial Hospital nurses held a Friday evening meeting at Grace church parish house. Despite stormy attendance, a thoughtful program featured Red Cross nursing films and remarks by Laura Knowlton Turner president of the Maine State Nurses association. Other speakers included Gladys Wolstenholme Esther Murphy Estella Coss and Geneva Strout. The gathering aimed to spark interest in training girls for nursing service.
Cub pack 55 at Winter Street church hosted Cub pack 33 of the Uni versalist church Brunswick. George T. Bishop from Morse High school spoke on rock formations showing specimens from his collection. The boys enjoyed the talk. Harry Halterman, a new member, demonstrated the bugle and a baseball tournament plan was discussed for practice.
The first city air raid drill for schoolchildren was held Friday afternoon with a pleasing degree of success. Alarms sounded at 2 30. pupils living within seven minutes on foot were sent home, while those farther away stayed with nearby hosts or relocated to safer areas within Morse High and Central Grammar. Center Street students evacuated due to nearby plants and business districts.
Bath Fire Department adds a Browder life net nine and a half feet in diameter carried on the hook and ladder truck. Chief Richard J. Frates advocated its purchase about a month ago to aid in life saving during emergencies. Six Windsor chairs replace old seats at Central Fire station to improve safety for heavier crew members.
Norbert Langa violin and Prof. Frederick Tillotson piano present a Bowdoin Memorial Hall concert on Thursday April 16 at 8 15 pm. The program includes Beethoven Beethoven Op 24 in F major Schubert Op 137 No 2 in A minor and d Indys Sonata Op 59 en ut. Public invited.
Mrs. Orville F. Rowe of Five Islands recently visited Mrs. Melvin Comeau at the Academy, sharing a courteous social call and fellowship.
