A Bath filling station apartment erupted in flames killing two children, Charles born October 18 1936 and John Jr born June 12 1938, and trapping their mother and grandfather amid dense smoke. Fire officials say grease and oil saturation and a single entrance worsened the blaze. The parents, Mrs. Emerson Helen Colby 23 and their 23 year old father a Bath Line driver, survived.
James Mermil, 22, of 13 Chestnut Street, injured when a plate dropped on his left leg at Bath Iron Works Corp. during the first night shift in the machine shop. He fractured his ankle, an accident occurring after nearly two years with no major bone breaks, cited as a testament to advances in safety through the plant's Safety Contests.
Miss Elizabeth Butterfield daughter of Mr and Mrs Andrew M Butterfield of Granite street has been chosen for an honorary Wheaton college English society as a senior. One senior English major is elected from five for membership in the Psyche society due to writing and English excellence.
The parole officer described parole board functions and methods for judging applicants. In Maine there are 390 in state prison with 48 lifers and others serving one to two year terms. Parole involves interview, home plans checks, neighbor inquiries, and a written board review.
Francis W Lyons a 76 year old retired marine fireman and shipyard worker of 8 Beacon Street suffered scalp wounds and concussion after being struck by a car on Washington Street near Oliver. Rolvin H Bowie 26 Drummond Street collected the report, police expect no charges. Lyons formerly sailed Bath Boston steamers and worked as a fitter at Texas yard and Bath Iron Works before retirement.
About 50 guests attended the silver tea Saturday afternoon from four to six o'clock hosted by Club Garret in the Church Block Front Street rooms. Proceeds support new curtains. Margery J. Scott and Betty Watson presided with Junior Club help. flowers donated by New Meadows Gardens.
Mrs. Benjamin Stackpole arrives back in West Bath after wintering in Melrose Massachusetts with her daughter Mrs. Blair Wilson and now staying with her son Charles Stackpole on Pearl Street.
Three veteran foremen from Bath Iron Works Bath Maine were celebrated at a testimonial banquet attended by about 150 fellow employees. Harry Q Richardson Everett W Neal and P Wetherbee received gifts reflecting long service in the pipe shop machine shop and blacksmith department respectively with Richardson noted as the oldest with 41 years.
Samuel Wakeman concluded duties with Bath Iron Works Corp Friday to join Bethlehem Steel Corp Fore River plant in Quincy Massachusetts. He was presented a silver cocktail set by 30 associates after a farewell banquet at Hotel Phoenix. The gift was given by Theodore A Earl of the production department where Wakeman served as assistant to Thatcher B Pinkham. He will work on the battleship project and had been at the local shipyard for five years.

Leo J. Gauvin owner of 1189 High street building contractor reports a pullet laid an exceptional egg last Wednesday. The giant egg weighs six ounces far exceeding the average two ounce egg and measures nine inches around its ellipse and seven and a half inches at the center. The pullet has only been laying for about two months.

The Women's Field Army of the American Society for the Control of Cancer gains support from the American Legion Maine department as officials promote a statewide educational broadcast. Stephen F. Chadwick, national commander, cites estimates that 450000 World War veterans may suffer cancer and urges action. Norman W. MacDonald will host the seven o'clock statewide broadcast on reducing fear of cancer.
Bath Retail Merchants Association met in City hall to tackle downtown parking during spring and summer. A committee was formed to study solutions, proposing several large lots near Front and Center streets. A police permit would allow Monday to Friday one hour parking in the business district until 6 pm, with unrestricted parking after. Saturdays would be one hour all day. Parking near hydrants or street corners remains prohibited. The group thanked City Marshal Butler and the police for cooperation.
Rev. Lara L. Chapman, pastor in Bath since September, resigns effective at Easter Sunday last service in Bath. She and Mr. Chapman seek rest, plan Lincoln Center as permanent home with secular work. Mrs. Chapman will continue Gospel work when possible. Mrs. Leonard Gowell to lead Bath mission.
A small group gathered for a North Center P T A meeting at Grace church parish house to discuss Projects and Purposes and how to improve the unit. Spring vacation shifts the April 18 music talk to May 2 and a follow up on Forward Trends moves to April 18, with tea served afterward.

Routine business was trans acted and committee reports heard. Mrs. Carroll A. Deering, Mrs. William P. Hatch and Mrs. James T. Bonney served dinner at noon. The program for the next meeting will be annaceenced later.

Percy Hodgkins of Postal Telegraph Co. sighted a flock of evening grosbeaks on Wi street near Pearl streets. The birds, bright yellow and black, are rare for this area and not the pine grosbeaks now common. Hodgkins even held one as it perched near red polls. Charles E. Holt, Hebron Academy baker’s assistant, is visiting the city with his mother, Ada M. Sprague, from Edward Street Court.

R., 6e ciety, were guests Monday afternoon of Fort Western Society, C.A.R., of Augusta to welcome national president Mrs. William H. Pouch of New York. The visit included a luncheon at the Augusta House Red Room and a reception in Portland. Mrs. Pouch, born in New York and raised in Brooklyn, later lived in Newburgh and Staten Island before joining the Richmond County D.A.R. in 1916. she has served as regent and, since 1937, as national president of the Society of Children of the American Revolution.

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Simmons both 93, of Friendship, mark 72 years of marriage. Mrs. Simmons, formerly Mary Cushman of Long Island Bremen, has resided at Bradford's Point for 52 years. They have two living sons Herbert and Owen, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, with two daughters having died. At Houston High school a circus queen candidate list was announced for the sixth annual show on April 14 and the queen will be crowned on the second night.
