Evans Engbretson, enlisted at Onawa Iowa March 2 1916, sent to San Domingo Cuba wounded, expected home to Basin where his parents reside. A depot crowd waited for his train but he was not aboard. Later reports say he fell ill in Omaha Nebraska preventing his return as planned.

Off the Water Wagon Runs Free Through Zane Store
A driver James McKinney tethered a city water wagon. the team bolted at 1 30 p m and barreled into L A Zane’s store causing glass damage. The horses were cut and one broke through into the cellar before being brought under control. Repairs to Zane’s plate glass and minor injuries to the team total a few hundred dollars.
