Volunteers from Muskogee Okmulgee Tulsa and Wagoner counties prepare a two day good roads effort aimed at repairing 200 miles of road connecting four major cities within a 25 mile radius of Muskogee. About 25 000 men expected to participate after rains improved road conditions.
A Moorpark group including Mr and Mrs George Read Mr and Mrs H L Bennett and Mr and Mrs H L Ward spent Wednesday night with relatives in Temecula and left Thursday for Blythe Riverside County where they have bought farms to reside. Three Santa Fe stock cars were moved to the new homes. A social dance at Lees honored the travelers. They were joined by Mrs Geo J and Mrs W H Desking who will return early next week.
The Arizona Division of Santa Fe employees held a banquet for Master Mechanic M P Cheney in Needles as he leaves service indefinitely. About 800 attended at the park, with 300 table seating, Moose and Indian bands provided music, and a $950 check was given in appreciation. Cheney will move to Colton for treatment for vision loss. Dr Shepards sanitarium cottages at Needles burned for unknown reasons around 8 p m with an estimated $5 000 loss and no fatalities.
Mrs. J. O. Peek and son Geo visit Barstow for two to three weeks while Geo Hart and family return from Bear Valley with Oscar Anderson. Mrs. Albert Giese of Los Angeles joins her husband in Barstow where he works in Lubin Henderson's tailor shop. L. K. Bryan leaves for Michigan and the East for a month. W. L. Thomas resigns as wrecker cook and returns to Los Angeles. Geo Kent and F. Conners take boiler maker helper roles. G. A. Mann attends Coast Line storekeepers meeting in San Bernardino. Carl Hansen returns from Stockton visit. family joined him. J. Kelleher enjoys vacation in San Francisco. Property sale offer by O. M. Lowell at Hotel Melrose with liberal terms in southwest Barstow. adjacent orange and alfalfa land in Riverside County offered. C. D. Mack and L. E. Woodbeck attend Needles banquet for M. P. Cheney. Catholic Ladies host a ball at Lee's hall next Monday. men 50 cents, ladies 25 cents. home made cakes and ice cream. Principal Brown to sing at Union church Sunday. W. J. Evans back from the East. Harry Barr returns from Los Angeles. Will E. Young and Miss Howardin Melton wed September 24. reside in Barstow after next week.
County supervisors visit Barstow to push county road bonds but fail to excite support. Desert residents condemn lack of concrete commitments and demand definite business facilities and measures to attract more commerce. The Needles bridge issue is dismissed as unimportant by officials.
Clarence H. Crooks a young Barstow rancher and Lavella Fisher wed in San Bernardino September 15. After their return September 22 Barstow friends gathered at the Crooks home for a celebration with a hearty feed and playful music.
Daggett and Vicinity Seymore Alf oversee road improvements from Daggett east to prepare for automobile traffic. Frank Lamantain remains in Los Angeles for a month. Mrs. Mary Osborne returns from a 10 day visit to eastern cities.
The U S Forest Service spent about $105000 in September to battle California fires, covering salaries and emergency patrols at $25 daily until rain. Patrolman Marx helped arrest K A Burkhart and J G Goodsell in Arroyo Seco Canyon for unextinguished campfires. Justice of the Peace Dunham in Pasadena suspended sentences.
United States Geological Survey reports describe granite near Gunnison Colorado marble near Barstow California and clay near northeastern Montana. Colorado granite is developing while California marble shows surface promise and Montana clay suits brickmaking and tile. A large company plans early development near Barstow and copies are available from the USGS Director in Washington D C.
E. L. Stanfield enlarges Central Garage to double size. A 30 by 40 foot addition nears completion for machine tools, while the original shop will be used exclusively for automobiles and supplies.
