G C Draecht, recently hired welder at Barstow yards, is hospitalized in Santa Fe with a severe back injury after a signal mix up near a donkey engine. Doctors report ear severed and stitched, expecting healing. Draecht paralyzed from the hips, wife and two children away in San Diego.
J H Forgey longtime Santa Fe agent at Kramer died in Dr Denton hospital Osdick early this week after an operation. He had served the agency for many years and was a familiar figure in local railroad business circles.
Elmer and John Newbrough returned Tuesday from nearly a week in Long Beach and Wilmington. Roy Best and nephew Earl and Roy Broiles of Fontana spent Sunday at M. A. Webber’s. I. K. Loomis is building a stone house on his chicken ranch. Mrs. Charles Barry hosted relatives from Los Angeles and Houston, Texas.
Mr and Mrs Fred Auerbach return ed this week from Germany where they spent the summer. The Auerbachs were accompanied by Mr and Mrs Arthur F Wolf of Needles. Mr Wolf wrote a travelogue of the trip for his home paper the Needles Nuggett which was very interesting.
Joseph Willett and his wife Mrs Joseph Willett arrived in Barstow from Seattle. They wed in Seattle last Saturday and plan to open the Willett Cafeteria and bake for the Crystal Cafe. Joe Willett, a baker by trade, will work at both establishments.
It was reported this week that Smoky Wallace, a retired Santa Fe engineer, died in San Diego where he had lived for the past several years.
Mrs. George Henderson hosted five ladies at the Harvey house last Friday. After dinner the group moved to Henderson’s home where Kiwanis husbands joined for a bridge game. Mrs. Harvey Mosier and Mrs. E. Evenson captured high scores.
Geo A Goodbub of San Bernardino representing Pacific States Electric Company visited Barstow today. He toured Hinkley ranches with a Tiernan Radio and Electric Store representative, saw extensive alfalfa west of Barstow and hundreds of turkeys on Seymour and Siemen ranches. The Mojave River Valley farming communities benefit from visiting salesmen as boosters and advertisers for the district.
The Hinkley School opened with large enrollment and Mrs. Sproule teaching again. Farm Bureau meeting scheduled for September 20. Woman's Club hosted Mrs BE M Kinslow and welcomed new members with cake and ice cream. Numerous residents and visitors mentioned including Ruth McNally at Kelley ranch and city trips to Los Angeles and Seal Beach. Ray Dillon, state motor officer, suffered severe injuries in Riverside. latest word offers cautious hope. Mrrs. Mahnk aids alfalfa expansion. local grading by C G Phillips. Billell family planning a long-awaited visit from Edgewood after 12 years.
Mr. and Mrs. A W Drouin of Stockton are visiting and may reside here this winter. Mrs. Drouin is a sister of Fred Lobaugh.
Nellie Jonas and Lillian Norse of Los Angeles spent the weekend with O. O. Jonas. Mrs. Pearl Waters of Dallas visits Mrs. E. M. Jones. Fairview school opens with twenty pupils taught by Mrs. Stockton. Marion Sischo returns to Los Angeles to finish USC College of Music studies. William Archer returns to San Francisco. Belle Fletcher visits cousin Mrs. Hand. Woman's Club quilts for raffle. Rue Baxter returns from Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. G. Harp report a fine vacation and a new Pontiac roadster. Alice Eisenheur visits Newberry friends.
Mr. and Mrs. George Deskins plan to return home this week from a vacation with friends Mr. and Mrs. Falconer of Redondo Beach as they visited old Mexico. Mrs. Almeda Craig will travel Friday to Wisconsin to see sisters she hasn’t seen in over twenty years. Al bert Craig of Redondo Beach visited his mother briefly before departure. Twenty children from Helen dal, Hodge, and Irenwood areas will attend Barstow schools this year, fourteen in high school and six in grammar. School bus duties this year are handled by Mr. Palmer from those localities.
Mr and Mrs Fred Auerbach returned from Germany where they were accompanied by friends in Needles, traveling together since the first part of June.
Mrs A Luminosa and her children are in Los Angeles this week accompanied by her sister Mrs Ana Cavaliere who arrived from New York for a visit at the Luminosa home on First Street. After Los Angeles they will go to Barstow for a week or two to continue the visit.
Electric shop ad announces obtaining agency for Delco Lighting plants. One plant was installed this week at Morgan Bryce Garage in Yermo.
Mrs J A Evans and her niece Eva May Abel left Sunday for Sawtelle to stay at Miss Abel's home. They spent the summer in Big Bear Valley at the Evans cabin before traveling south.
Mr and Mrs B EF Gauldin plus their son Herbert spent two weeks in Los Angeles and Redondo Beach. They motored home Saturday with Mrs Gauldin s cousin Mrs Hilda Haney a Barstow third grade teacher this year.
Operator Vanderhoof makes a brief visit to San Francisco, stopping at local facilities and meeting with regional staff. The trip focuses on inspecting operations and discussing ongoing projects with city partners.
Pete Ring traveled to Amboy on Wednesday to conduct business. The trip was described as routine with no notable incidents reported.
Miss Phyliss Arends and Miss Florence Topping traveled to Los Angeles at week’s start to enter the University of Southern California, beginning their studies there.

W. A. Birch division foreman for the Santa Fe with Barstow headquarters arrived home Tuesday after a four week stay in the Santa Fe hospital in Los Angeles. He and his family had left San Diego four weeks earlier and were returning home when their car overturned in Santa Ana Canyon injuring his left hand.
The Intermediate C. Es of San Bernardino county union plan a rally Sunday afternoon at 2 30 in the Rialto Christian Church. Endeavors in charge include Clarence Stephens Etiwanda Intermediate superintendent Miss Mary Stump Upland assistant Robert Boyd Highland and Miss Lucile Carter San Bernardino Intermediate cabinet members.
Miss Florence Topping, leaving for the Southern Branch of the University of California in Los Angeles, received a miscellaneous surprise shower Saturday evening. Hosted by Mrs. Ivor Davies and Mrs. George Henderson, guests gathered at Mrs. Harvey Mosier’s home then at Florence’s. High-score prizes went to Mrs. E Evenson and Mrs. Henderson, with gifts revealed from a present case carried by Catherine. Florence departs Monday for college.
Mr. Roystan of Los Angeles is named one of the new employees for the Santa Fe here. He will work in the yards as a switchman, adding to the railroad’s roster.
Harry Bossard is said to have returned to work for the Santa Fe and has bid on the puzzle switch job at the west end of the yard.
Judge L J Henderson and Dr Graham along with Mike O Chea W H Sides and other Barstow businesspeople were summoned to San Bernardino early in the week as witnesses in a Mexican murder case. The slaying occurred east of the Inn Camp owned by Mr Sides. he woke to singing Mexicans at midnight but paid no mind and slept on. The next morning a Mexican boy was found dead, stabbed by his companion during the previous night.
Mrs Rose Cannon came back from an east trip after weeks away and helped at the Waffle House today while Daisy Stone was home confined.
C. T. Greiner resumes duties as foreman for Union Pacific at Yermo, traveling with his brother-in-law L. A. Hand, a Los Angeles traffic officer. The pair toured by auto three weeks, visiting Salt Lake, Montana, and Idaho before returning home via northern California and the Sacramento San Joaquin valleys.
J. A. Sullivan has returned to San Bernardino and the beaches after two weeks spent at his service station in Barstow while Mr. and Mrs. Hill were at Redondo Beach.
Tony Savinovich, a former San Bernardino restaurateur, visited Barstow and arranged to open a cafe in the Doran building opposite Barstow Garage. He previously ran Tony's Cafe in San Bernardino and Tony's French Cafe on Third Street, then moved to Ludlow this summer. He has ordered printing and says the cafe will open in two or three weeks.
Y Frank Parks Jr died Friday night at his parents home in Los Angeles. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Frank Parks formerly of Barstow and a nephew of George Parks of Barstow. The doctor attributed the death to infantile paralysis and his parents attended the service with his uncle.
P. W. Willett plans a new cafeteria on First Street featuring electric refrigeration and electric cooking. Mrs. May Morris will supervise the operation.
Barstow Grammar School opened Monday with 272 pupils, rising to 288 by the third day, and aim for 300. The 12 new and returning teachers include Ethel Robinson, Jessie Garrett, Adele Beckwith White, Florence Pigman, Hilda Haney, Priscilla Lester, Roberta Ramsay, Drusilla Fry, Clara Moore, Clarence Pearce, and others. Departmental work begins in upper grades with English history geography arithmetic sewing art and music. Gladys Potter becomes Rural Supervisor.
George Hagerty was accompanied to the Santa Fe hospital in Los Angeles Tuesday by Mrs. McKinnon, according to Dr. Graham who was called to attend Mr. Hagerty. Dr. Graham thought it a case of kidney trouble but no further report was available after the nurse had returned to Barstow prior to the X-ray.
The ad promotes radio programs next week and offers Atwater Kent six tube set for 70 dollars and seven tube set for 115 with 10 months to pay. It promises easy delivery with no serial needed and mentions a Dempsey Tunney fight Thursday. Tiernan is referenced as a contact.
The Yermo indoor baseball players have been winning games against local teams. Henderson and Son display a trophy in their window and will award it to the winners within the local organization, which includes several clubs.
