School Census To Be Taken First Week In October

A census of all children under eighteen will be conducted by the school district in the first week of October under a new law. George C. Bush, superintendent, notes the legal requirement and need for additional workers. Mrs. Stuchsberry has resigned after years of service at Barstow Elementary, and S. M. Booth will assume duties. Grammar School rooms undergo decorative work by Mr. Butts and Mr. Harmon, with repairs by Mr. Clark.

Mrs E Pray will spend the weekend in Los Angeles and Long Beach, returning with Mr Pray's mother who has spent three months in Long Beach. Mr and Mrs Jesse Olney of Adelanto visited Barstow today. Adelanto is noted for its choice pears, and Mr Olney delivered some of his fruit in Barstow.

The Barstow branch library reports a year of growth with 8717 total circulations including 8579 books and 188 magazines. Registered borrowers number 555, up 94, while 1113 books were on hand as of June 89 1927. The branch, led by Mrs. Ella Topping, operated with limited new fiction available.

Barstow High School Announces Opening and Faculty

Barstow High School will open Monday September 12 with a faculty including Leon S. Paxton as Principal and Algebra teacher, E A Farrington in Science and Manual Training, Dorothy M Brass in Mathematics Domestic Science and Athletics, Wallace H Miller in Commercial and Athletics, Louisa M Pfau on Piano and instruments, Ethel Prather in English and History, and Charles Hurley in Spanish and History. New staff include Miss Prather and Mr Hurley replacing Miss Hitzler and Mr Ricks. Prather has degrees from Los Angeles, University of Oregon, and Columbia. Hurley studied at Stanford and earned AB and AM degrees.

Frank Marvin a Barstow resident for eight years died at San Bernardino hospital from severe burns incurred while burning brush at his home north of the Barstow bridge. Gasoline on his clothes ignited when he struck a match. a camper and neighbor aided as flames consumed him. His daughter Mable arrived shortly before death. he leaves a son Floyd in Barstow. Mrs Marvin had left for Kingman. Marvin ran a Barstow grocery business before moving to land near the river for a camp-ground venture.

Doctor Richards to speak on Victorville hospital plans

Dr 8S B Richards of Victorville will address Barstow Chamber of Commerce next Monday about the new Victorville hospital. He states plans will be presented and active construction will start within 30 to 40 days. A $350,000 subscription is reportedly raised.
