Gene Tunney defeats Jack Dempsey on points after ten hard rounds in Chicago to retain the world heavyweight title. The bout featured a back and forth by rounds with heavy trading, a knockdown for Tunney in round seven, and sustained punishment from both fighters as Tunney stages a late rally.
Barstow Produce defeated Santa Fe 26 to 10 to claim the indoor baseball league title in Barstow after a season with six teams. Kiwanis Club funded lights and expenses, ending the season with about $100 surplus to support future recreation, with plans for renewed play next spring and possible volleyball.
Zeb Kendall has taken over the Ord group of twenty eight mining claims in the Ord Belleville district, fourteen miles south of Daggett. Consolidated Virginia Mining Company of San Francisco, Kendall president, operates with Ord Mines Company under Victor L. Smith. Ownership includes Col Frank W. Werner and officers J I Carder, Fred Schley, Gordon Cole. Bond on the mine shifted to Consolidated Virginia along with Ophir Mining and Mexican Gold and Silver Mining. Kendall presides over all three Nevada concerns. About 300000 spent, four million tons of ore in sight. High grade ore exposures noted.
The decision to retain the world heavyweight championship came after a ten round bout. Gate receipts reached about 2.8 million dollars per promoter Tex Rickard. Governor Small and Jim Jefferies appeared on stage to introduce the event. Jack Sharkey then joined the platform and shook hands with Dempsey, who had defeated Sharkey weeks earlier in what fans called the hardest fight. G. E. B. Hagerty returned from Santa Pe hospital in Los Angeles and resumed work on Tuesday. A barbeque and program will be held at the west end of the Harvey house.
Mr and Mrs A L Addy of Ludlow left this week by auto for a visit with relatives in Ohio. Donald C Henderson of Needles was a Barstow visitor Tuesday.
Miss Marguerite Tiernan returns to Orange Cove Sunday after a ten day visit with her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. L. BE. Tiernan.
Baggageman known as Sparky Genoble in high spirits as his wife Mrs Genoble and baby Sarah Elizabeth prepare to return from Amarillo Texas. Baby Sarah was born September 3 in Amarillo.
W G Vogel former assistant round house foreman has been sent to Seligman to assume the duties of division foreman. Edward W Tucker is the new foreman in Barstow.
Mr and Mrs M A Beimer and their son Laurence drove to San Bernardino and spent the weekend with grandmother Beimer.
Donald Henderson of Needles organized a new railway clerks association in Barstow with sessions Tuesday and Wednesday. Nearly all applicants have joined, and the effort has met with considerable success.
Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Fred Hart, Mr. and Mrs. Tait and Arthur Doran were San Bernardino visitors Wednesday.
Mrs Steve Videl to host her mother Mrs W J Cockrell and brother Paul for a weekend visit. The guests reside in San Marino and will stay at the Videl home.
Otto Christianson has left the local switch engine job and now serves on the engineers extra board at Needles, expanding his duties to cover broader railroad operations in the area.
Mr and Mrs A Whitlow entertained many friends at bridge on Saturday night. Mr and Mrs George Henderson won the gentleman’s and ladies scores. Ice cream cake and coffee were served. Guests included Mr and Mrs George Henderson Mr and Mrs Mosier Mr and Mrs Haan and Mr and Mrs E Byenson.
The Maintenance of Way Association of the Arizona Division Santa Fe Railway invites the public to a barbecue in Barstow on Saturday September 24 starting at noon. Admission is $1 a couple and 25 cents for children. A first class program runs all afternoon with a baseball game and races including a Fat Man’s race. In evening a public dance with the Concoanut Grove orchestra. A major local event not to miss.
Mr and Mrs Frank Conrad and passenger George Roberts were in a severe crash east of the Oro Grande under head crossing. Initial reports said all might not survive but injuries were later updated with Roberts most seriously hurt. The Conrads were taken to Santa Fe hospital Los Angeles and Roberts to San Bernardino hospital. An Erskine sedan was wrecked and towed to Barstow Garage. M Conrad works as a switchman in the Barstow yards.
A Barstow Chamber meeting urged aid for a Victorville hospital after frequent Daggett Minneola crossings accidents. Mr and Mrs C. H. Hicks of Beverly Hills joined the Minneola turnover club Tuesday. their Franklin car overturned at Minneola crossing but they were unhurt and towed to Barstow.
Mr and Mrs A L Erwin of Los Angeles overturned their Chevrolet at a sharp Minneola Crossing curve while en route to the Grand Canyon. Mrs Erwin suffered a broken arm and was hospitalized after top and side damage to the car. Edwin Erwin, who was driving, said they did not see the turn in time. The car was towed to Central Garage Barstow, and the Grand Canyon trip was indefinitely postponed.
The first actual count of visitors entering California by automobile shows nearly 100,000 people came in August. Through the eastern border routes, 43,536 persons in 13,022 cars entered Southern California over 81 days. Overall, 99,657 passengers in 83,572 cars entered the state during the past month, signaling a sharp rise in auto tourism and the first official car passenger counts by border stations.
