Auto Stage From Kansas In Barstow Wednesday

The Wichita Daily Eagle reports Kansas Transportation Company will run a maiden bus trip from Wichita to Los Angeles. The trip left September 5 and reached Barstow September 12 with nine passengers aboard. Car issues delayed them a day. return plans outlined with fare set at 35 dollars and a seven day trip target.

Eclipse View At Barstow Draws Satisfied Crowd

Barstow residents who watched the Monday eclipse through smoked glass and prepared film enjoyed a clear view as the event approached totality. Temperatures fell from 98 to near the upper 80s during obscuration with no fog or clouds interfering. Weather turned cool afterward, and a Tuesday storm brought rain and intermittent downpours on Wednesday, with a high of 72.

Preservation plea for Pony Express sites in Sacramento

Sacramento September 10 1923 Mayor S F Melinch of St Joseph Missouri urged preserving Pony Express terminals as national landmarks upon his arrival with the 1923 Pony Express caravan. The idea will be pursued by the St Joseph and Sacramento chambers of commerce.

Train Washout Delays Freight Service Near Kramer

Three freight cars derailed near Kramer after an 80 foot washout of the road bed. Engine 180, piloted by K. C. Lee, crossed, then four more cars left the tracks. Wrecking crew cleared the line as North 22 and four freight trains halted until repairs. Joburg line washed out in several spots. no service to Joburg Wednesday or Thursday. Barstow yards flooded, water running onto the highway near the freight house reaching several feet deep in the ice plant area and nearby residences.

Barstow Celebrates 73rd Anniversary of Statehood

Barstow residents marked California’s 73rd anniversary with news of local travel, hospital recoveries, and community happenings. Families returned from Riverside and Yermo while others planned trips to Niagara Falls and the east. New residents arrived with the Santa Fe development as road work advances near Big Bear Lake. A major fire destroyed a building owned by George Vick after an oil stove explosion, with one family’s dramatic escape and injuries.

New Bastow store to open in Williams addition will house a meat market, grocery, and soda fountain under T. Smuin who leads the grocery department. Lease covers Chas e Williams building opposite the high school with modern fixtures and stock arriving in Bastow today. Owners are C. M. Johnson of Los Angeles and Dave Fredricks of Pasadena.

State to take over National Old Trail route at Victorville

The notice says an auto stage line will transport passengers from Wichita to Los Angeles over the National Old Trail Highway. A Cunningham bus carried nine passengers for 35 dollars while railroad fare is higher. The State Highway Commission will take over the route from the state line to the paved highway at Victorville on October first and aims to start operations soon. With 20000 tourists coming through California on the National Old Trail each month, immediate action is urged.
