An updated motor vehicle act introduces 16 provisions for drivers. Key rules require left passing by two feet, no passing at intersections without a traffic officer, restricted speeds when overtaken, 100 foot trailer rules, turning signals 50 feet ahead, and visible stop signals at 100 feet. It also mandates right of way rules, streetcar passings, grade crossing stops, and penalties up to 500 dollars or six months in jail.
A bulletin at the round house announces an all day Santa Fe mechanical department picnic for white employees and families at Harland ranch to celebrate Admission Day. A delightful party was held for Dorthy and Donald Hunt with twelve children. They enjoyed ice cream and cake on the Hunt lawn then rode Bauer's truck to Harland plunge for a moonlit swim, with sixteen swimmers in total.
Sacramento California reports show the state achieving a 10 year average of 95 percent of normal, higher than other states in the Land of Cotton. Arizona and New Mexico also perform well. The forecasted national cotton production for the year stands at 11,516,000 bales.
Major O P Sloat showed improvement last week and is believed to be definitively on the road to recovery. He has been taking solid food and resting well each night.

Robey W. Richmond son of Frank H. Richmond of Riverside died at 5 30 Tuesday night after contact with 4400 volt electric wires while moving houses for a Santa Fe project in Barstow. He returned from World War service, had a half interest in the moving business, and was killed when wires on the roof sparked as the crew passed beneath. His body was returned to Riverside after a coroners jury ruled the death accidental.
Twenty million persons visited motion picture theaters and amusements in the Southern California District last month, a new record. Clector Rex Goodcell notes annual attendance could top a quarter billion and expenditures may exceed 46.5 million dollars. Monthly admission tax receipts reached 322,344.41, up 33 percent from the prior year, signaling near 3.97 million in 1928 tax receipts versus 582,606 for 1918.
Arend's Cash Grocery opened in the new Henderson building drawing crowds from Barstow and nearby areas on opening day. The Barstow Electrical Shop will occupy the east section after completion. George Vick plans a top desert restaurant in a 26 by 40 foot space adjoining the concrete building. Mrs. Kate Stone will run a west half shop with shoes and novelties.
Miss Clara Bell, stenographer in the division storekeeper's office, departed for Los Angeles for a week's vacation.
