Driver of famous borax team celebrates birthday
Edward L. Pitcher, 68, celebrated his birthday October 29 at his home on South First Street. A native of Lodi, he and Frank Tilton of Ludlow are the last living drivers of the famed borax teams that hauled ore from Death Valley mines. Mrs. Pitcher baked the cake and joked about candles.

Eugenia G. White mother of Mrs. Noah F. Platt and E. L. White celebrated her 82nd birthday on October 16 born in Nashville Tennessee in 1849. Costume Party for One Hundred at Grammar School
Eighth grade hosts welcomed seventh graders and high school freshmen for a costume party in the auditorium. About a hundred children attended with Wallace Walton Bob Jenkins Ernest Barrett and Joe Carbonal tying for first prize. Second prize went to Martha Hart Betty Zoe Porter and Audry Hart. A grand march showcased varied costumes as Jim Lara’s orchestra provided dancing and games followed by refreshments.

Sometime Wednesday night a back window at Ensign Electric Service in the Postal Telegraph building was broken. A robber entered and took five dollars left in the cash register for change. Carl Groot, owner, reported the robbery to officers Ed Harris and Stanley Snedigar on Thursday morning.

Man Who Robbed Government Station at Lavic Caught
A telegram from Ludlow beacon maintainer led Daggett inspectors to arrest F. L. Galloway of Logansport Indiana driving a light sedan with two red lights on rear plates. Sheriff J. W. Everett escorted the prisoner, who was taken to San Bernardino and back to Ludlow for trial this Tuesday.

Night drive ends with shots near Mojave

House Burns and Baby Saved on Clark Street
A house on the rear of a Clark Street lot east of the Mexican store burned to the ground Thursday morning. Julia Sanchas owned the home occupied by the Santos Bustillos family. The fire, started by an unattended candle, forced the mother to rescue her baby. Fire crews from the city and Santa Fe confined the blaze to the single building, sparing nearby structures.

Doctor Treats Wounded Motorist Far From Town
Saturday night Dr John Graham attended Ben W Colburn after a car struck him while he fixed a tire on a Cadillac forty miles east of Yermo. Colburn, en route to Los Angeles from Salt Lake City, was taken to Victorville hospital with a deep abdominal cut and other injuries. The driver J G Hirrsbrunnz, a Webb school teacher at Claremont, was not fully blamed as Colburn left the road.

Kinspel and Gray Capture Two Ex-Convicts at Daggett
Friday night Joe Gray and Larry Kinspel nabbed two ex-convicts, one with six prior convictions including assault with a deadly weapon and rape. The pair, James H. Hoffman with six counts and Frank Grim, traveled in a stolen 1931 DeSoto from a Reading Pennsylvania garage. They were turned over to Constable Jin Lucas.

Hinkley Chamber Meets Next Week at School Auditorium
