Barstow Printer Subscription Campaign wraps up Saturday night at 8 as a sealed ballot box in Barstow Bank is moved to the Printer Office for counting. Campaign leaders pledge close competition, with votes cast for a Ford Coupe prize and final winners to be announced after checks and tally.
Robert Hodge returns after a three month absence from the Hodge Bros ranch. Seward Brisbane accompanies him from Vancouver after joint deep sea fishing in New York. They hunted bear and deer in Canada before returning to the ranch in the United States with doctors. Arthur Brisbane expected but may be delayed building in New York.
A Texaco station is under construction at Third and Main in Barstow. Corrugated iron pipe replaces a drainage ditch as hydraulic grease racks and machinery arrive. Manager Felix Civerolo expects public opening by mid November and notes the company has already invested several thousand dollars in Barstow.
The Hinkley Valley Club hosted Harper Lake and Barstow Club women for a luncheon and program. A. J. Weid performed piano pieces, Mrs Whicker spoke on Esperanto as a universal language, and several readings and musical numbers were shared. Mrs S. Hill presided.
A meeting at Mrs. Kerr's home organized a town basketball team with officers elected. Mrs. Kerr chosen business manager and players listed as Kerr Davies Martin Soules Gliebe. Mrs. Kerr served refreshments helped by Mrs. West.
Eugene Walter Sample, a 744 pound infant, arrived October 3 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Sample. The newborn, noted for powerful lungs, is described as an inspection officer for the state traffic department stationed in Daggett. This is the second birth in the Sample family.
Miners report rich specimens of ore recently found at the Bercham property operated by Mr. Twohy in the Calleo district. The claim contains gold, lead and silver, signaling valuable mineral prospects ahead.
The San Bernardino County Fair Association wrapped a successful three day event in Victorville. Needles Barstow Adelanto and Yermo booths showcased minerals fruit and livestock. Notable highlights included Williams Barstow display of gems a Mojave alfalfa exhibit and prize winning hay and fruit from McCormick ranch. J Chauncey Hayes and Louis J Arland aided the effort while Arland read a Mojave poem dedicating it to fair president C M Moon.
Barstow Lenwood and Mojave valley receive publicity from the new TAT station near Lea wood known as the Barstow station. Teletype reports coast to coast, with J Melcher the dispatcher and H Davis the weather forecaster. The station features a hydrogen balloon ascent each day and a 150 foot well, sprinkler system, cactus garden, canopy telescope for planes, tire area, and separate rest facilities for men and women. Four men are employed led by J R Reynolds as manager.
Application by Public Utilities Consolidated Corp seeks War Department permission to build an overhead wire crossing the Colorado River at Topock Arizona. Wire to sit not less than sixty one feet above the high water. Maps of the proposed crossing are on display in the U.S. District Engineer's Los Angeles office for public inspection, with objections based on navigation interests invited.
Joe Williams acted as pinch hitter and piano player at the Kiwanis gathering. Speakers failed to arrive, so members spoke, presenting updates on school attendance, crowded facilities, power issues from lightning, and the Victorville Fair. Tables were arranged for individual seating and chicken dinner was served family style.
A pump is being installed this week at the Zenda mine in Calico after miners found no water in the tea shaft but dampness at lower levels. Officials recall last year when water rose in the old shaft within twenty four hours and earlier in Celie hill. Lucerne Valley display awarded a blue ribbon for canned fruit. 900 tons of alfalfa and 2200 mammoth bronze tubers noted.
Barstow activists led by president Alfred Henderson traveled to Victorville to launch a new Barstow style youth club. Sixteen Victorville youths seek charter in eight weeks with Lions Club support and backing from Barstow members and local business leaders. The Mohawk Cafe hosted the meeting with turkey dinner as Victorville collapses enthusiasm into a formal push for cross town friendship and civic progress.
Barstow gains as a winter tourist hub with new hotels and a improving Death Valley route. A new road segment from Baker via Arrowhead is under work, promising easier access to the rim. Ryan hotel opened for visitors, Furnace Creek Inn to expand on November 1 to meet rising demand. Union Pacific boosts promotion, predicting Death Valley will rival Grand Canyon as a major attraction.
The Barstow Fire District board appointed L. White as fire chief at a recent meeting. Commissioners George Cuntingham, A. J. Morgan, and Reece Dillingham approved the move. A new 6 cylinder engine and two 4-ton chassis with pump are planned, funded from existing district treasury balances with no extra tax burden.
