The final vote period ends Saturday night at 8 o clock. Subscriptions turned in over the next two days are worth more than any to come. Extensions on new subscriptions during the first period are the most valuable for vote totals and can decide the outcome.
A note urges subscribers who joined for one year to extend their support with a second payment of 2.00 counting for 30 000 votes or upgrade to three years for 80 000 votes. It is the last week of big votes and up to Saturday night 8 o'clock, extensions and second payments are most profitable for candidates. No second payment credits in the last period.
Mr. Fred W. Clooney, Ludlow school supervisor, visited the Ludlow school all day. A lively social week includes out of town visitors, dances, and a ladies cooking class ice cream fundraiser for the school fund. Doris Daniels of Barstow stayed with Francuolene O’Connell. others visit from San Bernardino Pomona and Cadiz.
Local schools observe a ditch day as a safety valve for student excesses. The event prompts disruption at the start of the school year. Judge Henderson provided the response, noting the need to address the issue.
Henderson and Nicklin sold the Bagdad Chase property once owned by John Roth to W. W. Tucker W. H. Winkleman and Chas Brefalt of Los Angeles. The 20 acre tract adjoins Barstow on the west and will host a new ore treatment process with a complete demonstrating and custom plant. Construction is expected to start in about ten days.
Marion Jasper Meeker age 76 died at Loma Linda hospital after running Camp Cajon garage and store serving Camp Cajon residents and Mojave Desert travelers. Survived by three sisters two daughters and a son Ezra Meeker continues business. Father Azra Meeker pioneer of Oregon Trail era.
A recent teachers reception sponsored by the PTA was held in the auditorium after a brief program. Mrs West and Mrs Cox served punch, and funds were solicited from local merchants for refreshments. The organizers thank all generous donors for their support.
Brakeman Earl T. Rice died en route to Los Angeles after being found beside tracks near Ludlow with a severed foot and mangled leg. He bled to death despite first aid in Seligman and Barstow preparation for burial. An American Legion telegram aided burial arrangements at Barstow.
Barstow Woman's Club resumed after summer break with a luncheon at Rose Inn. Mrs McRae led a prayer, Mrs George Henderson welcomed members, officers spoke on plans, and Mr Whicker lectured on Wills and Deeds. Mrs Clyde Orr won a surprise prize.
News notes that many subscribers have paid in advance since the campaign began and mailing galley dates will be updated before October 17. Check the name line next week for the correct date and report discrepancies. Unpaid accounts may be sent to the merchants credit association for collection unless a valid reason is provided. The Barstow Chamber of Commerce plans a musical program at Victorville Fair on Sunday October 12 starting at 12 30 PM.
An open conference for mining interests of Southern California was held in San Bernardino last week with speakers versed in mineral topics. Mojave Valley participants Mrs. J. R. Lane and Mrs. H. J. Jackson from Calico praised the Zenda mine and its silver yield, while Walter W. Schmidt urged a statewide plan to expand mining resources through surveys, markets, and cooperative efforts during the San Bernardino County session at the Junior College.
All school age children are admitted Friday October 10 as part of the fair celebration. The event marks a dedicated day to welcome young attendees to the fairgrounds.

The Yermo Union Church plans ten days of Evangelistic services led by W V Morgan starting November 1. A large welcome sign has been placed on the main highway inviting all to attend.
David Morgan general manager of the Zenda mine at Calico was at the camp for several days this week. The payroll lists 66 men. The new shaft advances 614 feet daily while drifting continues in the old shaft.
Henry Britt visited Los Angeles recently on a mining deal and plans to open in West Calico soon.
A. Otto of Los Angeles former mining man from Cima visited with friends Mr. and Mrs. Bob Campbell of Daggett. He plans mining ventures in the York mountains after the reunion.
Doctor and Mrs. Larry Young of Palo Alto were recent guests of Mrs. Tennie McKinnon.
Alec Clark and Stanley Snedigar recently purchased the Bert Wilson place located west of Barstow for an undisclosed sum.
Rev. David McLeod and his wife from Pomona will lead the quarterly gathering at the Free Methodist Mission scheduled for October 18 through 20.
Bostow postmaster A A True left for Loma Linda hospital Wednesday. Friends wish him speedy recovery. Mrs Zentmire serves as substitute teacher this week during Miss Wickler's illness absence.
Mrs. E L Pitcher returned home this week after several weeks in Los Angeles, marking a homecoming noted in local society circles.
A crew arrived in Barstow this week and began work on the viaduct over the tracks at First street. The engineer says the project should be finished within five or six months.
Construction crews have completed work for the T A T service as beacon lights between Barstow and San Francisco are installed. Barstow will become a division point for both air and rail services, signaling the start of operations.
Miss Nellie Cooper was knocked over on the sidewalk last week when two dogs playing bumped against her. The result was a badly sprained knee. After several days absent she returned to school Monday though still limping.
Cement sidewalks offer a cheap improvement that greatly increases property values and reduces walking wear. The author notes the savings in shoe leather and energy from improved pedestrian paths.

Clifford Northup of Empire visits with Carl Northup, with theatre outing at San Bernardino Fox Theatre. A Cajon Camp picnic precedes city trip as Mrs Jenkins of San Bernardino visits her husband on the highway project. Robert Campbell builds a powder house due to rising mining calls. Murphy Brothers of Ludlow advertise Hercules Powder, noted Mojave Desert suppliers. Mrs Buel Funk returns from Big Bear Valley where she has been visiting.
Exhibitors have placed displays in large tents along Victorville's west highway for San Bernardino County's first three day fair. Hacienda Camp Cady stock and trainer Kid North prepare racing stock. Miss Cayla Mahlon named Miss Yermo to represent Silver Valley. Barstow showcases minerals from Charles E. Williams, with local talent in Barsto w Chamber program. Helendale district promotes itself with pamphlets on shallow water agriculture and vegetables.
Barstow High School held an October 5 1929 assembly to elect student body officers amid keen nomination competition. Officers chosen included President Frank Speth Vice President Glen McCoy Secretary Treasurer Leah Chapin Editor Nellia Cooper Athletic Manager Scott Kerr. Classes plan activities and interclass competitions through the year.
Mr and Mrs Gienn L Palmer and baby Mae Fiorine left Monday for an extended trip through California and Oregon They may settle in Klammoth Falls where a first class dance orchestra job awaits Gienn Palmer has long worked as manager of a Shell station in Barstow and will visit as far north as Portland If they decide to stay their return may be delayed A fire alarm at 1230 Monday night led to Fire Chief George Cunningham responding to a blaze in the western five bed section a Diaz family home burned and the fire was under investigation
