attorney attacks state arms law in California firearms case
In Hanford on November 20 attorney C A Bradley argued for a new trial for Gavino Ramirez, an alien convicted of possessing a revolver under the California firearms statute. Bradley contended the law violates the fourteenth and second amendments and harms property rights. District Attorney W R McKay countered that the law applies to all foreigners and does not abridge state police powers. Judge M L Short denied the new trial petition but granted a sixty day stay via a writ of probable cause, with Bradley planning to seek a habeas corpus writ from the state supreme court.
