State Highway Commission at Work on Desert Road

The State Highway Commission will improve the National Old Trail Highway with equipment sent to Barstow. Five Fordson tractors arrived, larger units to follow, Belmont crew to Newberry Camp, and Bear Valley crew to transfer by December. J. E. Stanton leads as engineer in charge. work aims to better condition the road though hard surfacing is not yet planned.

Court to hear civil suits in Needles next February

Superior Judge Benjamin F. Warmer will relocate his court to Needles for two civil cases weekly starting February 26, with his clerk James Kilian Court Reporter J E Rich and Bailiff W W Holcomb accompanying. The move follows a state law requiring courts to sit in litigants home communities if they live more than 200 miles away, enacted two years ago after Blythe residents complained of travel costs to Riverside.

Railroad worker earnings rise in first half of 1923

Salaries and wages for railroad employes of all classes in the first six months of 1923 averaged 136 dollars per month, about four dollars higher than the same period in 1922. The total in service reached 1,850,000, up from 1,600,000 the previous year.

The General Electric Co. reports value of manufacturing plants rising from about 4,000,000 in 1893 to 167,000,000 in 1923, factory floor space expanding from 400,00 to over 25,000,000 square feet by end of 1922, and employment increasing from 4,000 to over 74,000.

Grapes Crated Near Barstow Express Office

A half dozen crates of grapes were staged on a truck outside Barstow express office. The label reads From G P Ohlinger Lodie Cal to Piggiey- Wiggley Carlsbad New York. Barstow claims proximity to the New York market and ideal desert land for vine culture. Mrs O E Griffith and daughter Mrs Harry Schmitt have been ill at their homes this week.
