Desert Elks Entertained as Special Guests

The Desert Elks were honored guests at the San Bernardino Elks Club on Saturday for the Annual Home Coming of Lodge 836. A banquet preceded novelty entertainment with songs, dances, and sleight-of-hand tricks. greetings from Brother Ellis marked the highlight, with desert attendees listed including Dale Morris, F B Morris, Bob Greer, Mike Ocho, O J Finke, Edward Evans, Fred Gardner, Ralph Haan, Geo Patton, Reece and Forrest Dillingham, J J Payne, and Lillie Jacobson of Barstow.

Local Legion Post Again Wins Citation

American Legion California drive ended Sunday November 16 with Barstow Post leading gains at 20 percent over last year. Banning and Rim of the World Posts in Twenty first District also posted top results in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Barstow plans to receive a national citation while a next Legion dance for Red Cross funding is discussed for December 1.

Stanley Ford Returns to Rail Work After Goffs Relief

Stanley Ford formerly of Daggett and Barstow, now in Victorville the past year, has resumed railroad work. He spent three weeks as relief operator at Goffs for Mrs. Rust during her mother's illness. He returned to Victorville Tuesday night and will depart soon for Needles.

Mrs. W. W. Smith Dies in Victorville Hospital

Mrs. W. W. Smith, wife of postal worker W. Smith, died Thursday morning at nine o'clock in Victorville hospital after being taken from Barstow weeks earlier. She had lived in Barstow for many years.

Girl Scouts Thank Barstow for Berbecue Proceeds

The Girl Scouts thank Barstow residents for a barbecue that raised 30 dollars. At Wednesday’s meeting it was decided volunteers could pick up unwanted toys from Mrs Haws residence to work on them later. The toys will be handed to the 20 30 club for distribution at Christmas.

Big Trail film charms visitors to Hollywood theater

Miss Clara Bell and Dr. Morrison visited Arthur Bell in El Monte last Sunday to see the Big Trail at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Doc praised the picture while highlighting John Wayne, his nephew, in a leading role. Wayne recently spent part of a day in Barstow with his uncle en route to the Grand Canyon where a scene was filmed.

Miss Margaret McKinney hosted by her mother Mrs O J McKinney and friend Dave Wixom of San Bernardino. Mrs Frank West visits daughter Mrs Leonard Bush in Inglewood. Doctors Hainsworth and Drey from the State Department of child hygiene examined 33 children in Needles and 98 in Barstow.

The Mojave Valley received its first rain of the season last Thursday followed by a light sprinkle Saturday evening. Light frost then settled in as wintry weather persisted, and snow was reported in all mountain sections of the state.

Local PTA Meeting Showcased Barstow Students

At Barstow grammar school Wednesday night the Parent Teachers Association presented an excellent program enjoyed by a packed auditorium. Miss Reedy directed the Glee Club with praise for each division, while Walter Williams led the orchestra and Jack Brainard staged the one act play. Two Mexican children stirred applause in a costume dance as parents mingled during a social hour with cake and coffee afterward.

Red Cross Campaign Mobilizes Mojave River Valley Kiwanis Teams

The Mojave River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross tasks Kiwanis Club members with the annual roll call. Two Kiwanis teams compete to recruit names while donations support both local needs and national headquarters. The drive runs from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Day.

Hinkley Club Meets Despite Stormy Weather

The Hinkley Woman's Club gathered last Thursday with a good turnout. Mrs. Alice G. Sproule led a Thanksgiving themed program of piano duet, readings, quotations and songs. A business meeting followed with light refreshments. Farm Bureau met Tuesday evening with a membership drive targeting 4 H for youth.
