Kao Ying former San Francisco vice consul and his wife received prison terms for smuggling opium into the United States. Kao Ying drew seven years for the opium charge and sixteen months more for transporting laborers. his wife was sentenced to four years and fined about 2250 dollars. Suen Foon, long San Francisco consulate chancellor, was cited in the case.

Las Vegas representatives Joe Dayton and I A Parkee invited Barstow youths to the Fifth District Convention in Riverside on Saturday, November 23. Barstow Branch of the County Free Library has new 24 volume 1929 Encyclopaedia Britannica edition. The edition offers largely a new encyclopedia with rich illustrations. November 17 marks the start of Children's Book Week with a library display and posters to promote reading for kids. books displayed circulate starting November 25.

State Considers Building Sites for Prisons and Hospital

A committee from the State Surveyor and State Architect offices surveys about sixty proposed sites for the first offenders' prisons and a new State hospital for Southern California. Alexander B. Heron, State Director of Finance, notes the search extends from San Diego to Los Angeles. Longest Span Of Viaduct At Barstow Given 172 Feet

Barstow construction advances on a fire reinforced concrete piers for a steel viaduct across the freight and passenger yards at First Street. The longest span will exceed 170 feet over the passenger tracks. Superintendent W. E. Sait reports rapid progress with piers and plans to double the work crew when steel arrives from Roanoke Virginia. An additional crew will handle a northern end fishing area near the Harvey house. The bridge is expected to be travel ready before spring.

Barstow Woman's Club Holds Meeting in New Boy Scout Building

The Barstow Woman's Club met last Tuesday in the new Boy Scout building. The room showed chrysanthemums and a fire. Mrs Meserve of San Bernardino spoke on the Junior Club work. Mrs Stanley of Redlands discussed Billboards and Mrs Bunnell from Redlands gave a talk on an eastern trip. The Sischo sisters from Newberry performed a cello and piano duet. A business meeting followed and it was decided to curtain the windows. Refreshments of pumpkin pie and coffee were served.

Geologist Finds Asbestos Deposit Near Baker Calif

A. B. McAntire, a geologist and owner with Abe Shapiro and Elmo Proctor of near Baker claims, reports discovery of chrysolite asbestos in Southern California ten miles south of Baker. He notes the deposit requires four claims and calls it the first commercial find in the region, with ideal access near Soda Lake, the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad, and major highways. He also mentions gem-stone deposits supplied to Europe and the Orient.
