Tax Campaign Grows For County Tax Relief

Barstow and the Mojave River Valley back a statewide push to reimburse lost public utility tax revenue. A five member committee led by C. E. Grier outlines a campaign to educate voters in 48 counties with a November ballot amendment. San Bernardino loss is about 260000 yearly. funds to be raised by benefited counties. Grier to report after reviewing conference with the board next Monday.

Mildred Wester, a Barstow Union High School graduate now attending the junior college at San Bernardino, was home over the last weekend to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. 0. Wester.

Trenkle Woman Killed In Barstow Auto Crash

Mrs Wm Trenkle wife of a Tonopah and Midewater railroad conductor was instantly killed Tuesday evening in an automobile accident near Barstow. She was driving a new Ford sedan with four children and her sister in law aboard. The car ran off the road after she waved to friends and overturned pinning her beneath. The husband and four children survive. the body was sent to Los Angeles after preparation in Barstow.

Barstow Woman's Club plans a banquet at the Harvey House next Tuesday evening with officer installations to follow in the Boy Scouts building. The Barstow P T A held its final meeting of the year in the grammar school auditorium, marked by Walchers night. A program featured music by students, talks on child welfare and thrift, and installation of next year’s officers led by Mrs Trilane.

Fossil beds vandalized near town in California region

J K Poyas of the Santa Fe engineering dept, touring fossil beds north of town from Los Angeles, found specimens crushed by a hammer and others burned in a fire. He urged setting the beds aside as a government park to protect them, noting the tourist value to the district.

District Attorney Johnson Speaks at Kiwanis Meeting

Barstow Kiwanis heard District Attorney George H. Johnson discuss communism, recount the Yucaipa camp crackdown, and describe the 13 district structure of the movement. The event included musical numbers by Miss Clark and Miss Beaumont, plus Ed Seymour’s 21st wedding anniversary celebrated with cake and gifts. Deputy D A Kavanaugh accompanied the speaker.

Surprise party honors Beimer husband birthday

Mrs Beimer hosted a Friday evening party with guests including Mr and Mrs A W Smith and Mr and Mrs Deskins. Games of 500 yielded high scores for Deskins and Haan while Alfred Smith and George Deskins won cards and a pencil flashlight. Refreshments of ice cream, cake, and coffee followed later.

Victor Motor Company to Serve East of Vermo

The Railroad Commission grants K M Stevenson and Paul Shafer, operating as Victorville Motor Express, a public convenience and necessity to run freight and express service between Yermo and the California Nevada line via US 91. Authority may be consolidated with existing service from Los Angeles to San Bernardino and the Victorville Barstow Daggett Vermo area. The Daggett Needles route via US 66 was denied.

Mr and Mrs Chic Warner Plan Grand Canyon Trip

Mr and Mrs Chic Warner will leave the first of the month for a month long auto vacation. They will visit the Grand Canyon Bryce and Zion National Parks and return home via Yosemite.

Young Men Held After City Disturbance and Robbery

Officer Harris detained Elmer Weidner and James Miller both 21 and 23 from St. Joseph Missouri after a Baker store robbery and a break in at Failings store. Pistols were found under their coats and confessions linked them to other thefts near Salt Lake and Las Vegas. They travelled in a stripped Ford and were captured before dawn as Barstow officers joined Victorville in arresting them.

Denver & Rio Grande Western to Buy D & Salt Lake Line

Washington May 21 Purchase of the control of the Denver and Salt Lake railroad by the Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad was advised today in a tentative report by an Interstate Commerce Commission agent as in the public interest and should be permitted. The Salt Lake line holds a lease of the Moffat tunnel west of Denver, making the Salt Lake line strategically important for transcontinental service.

Kiwanians Hold District Meeting in Las Vegas

Kiwanis district six meeting in Las Vegas at Hagles hall drew the best attendance in two years. Speakers from Redlands and San Bernardino district clubs highlighted the program chaired by Clare Holmes. A Las Vegas floral tribute, a dinner, and a Sunday trip to the Black Canyon dam site capped the event with about 30 visiting Kiwanis members taking part.

Voters Express Rejection Of Barstow Bond Issue

Barstow Union High School District voters again opposed a bond issue with 325 against and 318 in favor. Precinct returns from Atolia Minneola Kramer pending. Barstow 125 opposed. Ludlow and Harper Lake flipped to noes or yes as noted. Districts Helendale Hody Ludlow and Barstow supported the board. Yermo Daggett and other towns voted no. Totals 320 yes 357 no across grammar school precincts.
